Chapter 2 - The Audit of Flesh and Blood

The Hook: When the mafia asks for an accountant, they aren't looking to balance books—they're looking for a weapon. The next morning, Elena didn't get to drink her coffee in peace. At exactly 7:00 AM, a sleek black sedan pulled up over the curb outside her brownstone apartment. Two men in identical charcoal suits stood by her front gate.

She didn't run. She knew running from the Moretti family was like trying to outrun the sunrise. Instead, she dressed in her sharpest navy pantsuit, grabbed her encrypted laptop, and walked downstairs.

The drive was silent. She was taken not to a smoky, stereotypical backroom, but to a towering skyscraper in the heart of Boston's financial district. The penthouse office belonged to Moretti Holdings.

When the elevator doors opened, she found Dante sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, looking over a sea of digital spreadsheets. The contrast was startling—the notorious mafia boss looking every bit the legitimate billionaire CEO.

"Sit, Elena," he said without looking up.

She sat in the leather chair opposite him. "If this is about the six million dollars, Mr. Moretti, my report was accurate. The funds were being funneled through a shell company registered in Panama, disguised as shipping container maintenance costs."

Dante closed his laptop and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "I know the report was accurate. That’s the problem. I didn't authorize that transfer. Someone inside my organization is stealing from me, using the city's infrastructure as a screen. They thought the politicians would take the blame if it ever came to light."

Elena frowned, her analytical mind overriding her fear. "You want me to find out who it is."

"I want the best eyes in the city," Dante said. "The police are too loud. The feds are too compromised. You, however, have a habit of digging until you find the bone. Find the mole, Elena. Name the person who betrayed the family."

"And if I refuse?"

Dante leaned back, a cold, clinical look passing over his face. "Then I let the public know exactly who blew the whistle on the port authority. Do you think Grant Mercer is the only dangerous man angry with you today? There are three dock union leaders currently looking for the person who ruined their retirement funds. Without my protection, your life expectancy in Boston drops to roughly forty-eight hours."

Elena felt a chill run through her. It was a golden cage. He wasn't just offering a job; he was offering a shield, but the price was total compliance.

"I need full access to your internal ledgers," she said after a long pause. "Every transaction, every shell company, every off-shore account dating back five years."

"Done," Dante replied. "But you won't be working from your office. You'll be staying at my estate in Beacon Hill. For your own safety—and to ensure your absolute focus."

Before she could protest, the office door burst open. Grant Mercer marched in, flanked by two corporate lawyers. His face was flushed with anger, though he noticeably flinched when his eyes met Dante's.

"Elena! I knew it," Grant shouted, pointing a finger at her. "My father's lawyers have been looking into your little 'award.' You used confidential data gathered during our engagement to target my family's associates! We are suing you for corporate espionage, and I'm personally making sure your license is revoked."

Grant looked at Dante, trying to find his footing. "Mr. Moretti, I don't know what this woman told you, but she’s a fraud. She’s using you to protect herself from the legal fallout of her own theft."

Elena stood up, her jaw clenched. "Grant, leave. You're embarrassing yourself."

Dante didn't stand. He simply picked up a sleek fountain pen, spinning it between his fingers. "Mr. Mercer. I believe I gave you explicit instructions last night regarding this lady's boundaries."

"This is business, Moretti!" Grant snapped, emboldened by the presence of his lawyers. "You can't control the legal system. She signed a non-disclosure agreement when we were together regarding my family's holdings. She violated it."

Dante stood up then, and the entire atmosphere in the room shifted. He was taller than Grant, broader, and carried an aura of absolute, terrifying authority. He walked around the desk, stopping right in front of Grant’s lead lawyer.

"Your client signed a contract with death the moment he touched her last night," Dante said softly, his voice cutting through the lawyers' confidence like a knife. "As for the lawsuit... if I see a single legal filing with Elena Vance’s name on it by noon, I will personally audit the Mercer family’s construction contracts. And believe me, your foundations are very, very shaky."

The lead lawyer looked at the floor, his face pale. He grabbed Grant’s arm. "Grant, we're leaving. Now."

"No! She owes me!" Grant screamed, even as his own legal team dragged him out of the room. "You think you're safe with him, Elena?! He’s a monster! He’ll discard you the second you’re not useful!"

As the door clicked shut, Elena looked at Dante. He was watching her, his dark eyes searching her face for any sign of weakness.

"He's right about one thing," Elena said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. "You are dangerous."

May you like

Dante walked closer, standing so near she could feel the heat radiating from him. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline, right where Grant had grabbed her the night before.

"I am the devil you know, Elena," he whispered. "And right now, I’m the only one keeping you alive."
