Chapter 6 - The New Regime

The Hook: A true king doesn't rule alone; he rules with the monster who outsmarted him.The silence in the foyer was deafening. Lorenzo was trembling; Grant looked close to passing out from blood loss and shock. Lev and the other guards stood frozen, waiting for Dante’s command to fire.
Dante looked down at the flash drive in her hand, then up into her cool, calculating eyes. For a long moment, the only sound was the crackle of the dying fire in the hearth.
Then, slowly, Dante began to laugh.
It wasn't a cruel laugh, but a deep, genuine sound of appreciation. He reached out, his fingers wrapping around hers, closing her hand back over the flash drive.
"A merger," Dante repeated, the amusement clear in his voice. "You come into my city, use my brother as a pawn, use my resources to wipe out your enemies, and then demand a seat at my table."
"I don't demand it, Dante," Elena said softly, stepping closer until their breath mingled. "I earned it. You wanted a weapon to find the mole. I gave you the mole. I just happened to be the one who created him."
Dante turned to Lev. "Take Lorenzo to the basement. He will face the council for his betrayal. As for Mr. Mercer... call an ambulance, but ensure the police are waiting at the hospital to arrest him for domestic terrorism and attempted murder. His family’s company belongs to us by morning."
"Yes, Boss," Lev said, quickly moving to execute the orders.
Grant screamed as he was dragged away, his voice fading into the night air as the remaining guards cleared the room, leaving Dante and Elena completely alone amidst the wreckage of the siege.
Dante looked around the ruined foyer, then turned his gaze back to Elena. He reached out, his hand sliding behind her neck, pulling her firmly against him.
"You are a terrifying woman, Elena Vance," he murmured, his thumb pressing against her pulse point, feeling its steady, calm rhythm.
"You don't get to the top of the financial world by playing nice, Mr. Moretti," she replied, a dangerous spark igniting in her eyes.
"It’s Dante to you now," he whispered, his eyes dropping to her lips. "If we are partners in crime, we should at least be on a first-name basis."
"Partners?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "Just like that?"
"A man who can't appreciate a woman who can outsmart him is a fool," Dante said, his grip tightening possessively around her waist. "You stole six million dollars from me. I expect you to make that back for the family tenfold."
"Give me a month, and I'll double it," Elena challenged, a confident smile spreading across her face.
Dante didn't answer with words. He leaned down, catching her lips in a fierce, passionate kiss that tasted of whiskey, adrenaline, and absolute victory. This time, there was no emergency. There was no audience. It was a declaration of war against the rest of the world.

As they broke apart, Elena looked out the shattered windows toward the Boston skyline. The city looked different now. It was no longer a place where she had to hide from her past or fear the shadows.
She had kissed a stranger in a dark corridor to escape a boy, only to realize she belonged in the arms of the king. And together, they were going to burn the old empire down and build something entirely their own.
