Chapter 4 - The Midnight Siege

The Hook: The blood on the floor isn't as terrifying as the truth behind the attack. The hallway was a war zone. Smoke filled the air, smelling of sulfur and burnt plaster. Dante moved with lethal, terrifying grace. He wasn't just a boss who ordered hits; he was a predator who knew how to hunt.

Two men dressed in tactical gear rounded the corner, their weapons raised. Dante fired twice before they could even register his presence. Both men fell instantly, their blood pooling on the white marble floor.

Elena followed close behind, her heart in her throat. She had spent her life dealing with numbers on a screen; she had never seen life extinguished in a fraction of a second. Yet, seeing Dante protect her with such savage intensity sparked something primal inside her.

They reached the grand staircase overlooking the main foyer. Below them, a dozen men were engaging in a fierce firefight with Dante’s loyal guards. Standing near the shattered glass entrance was Lorenzo Moretti, looking panicked but desperate.

And right beside him, holding a shotgun with trembling hands, was Grant Mercer.

"Find the woman!" Grant screamed over the noise of the gunfire. "Lorenzo, you promised me she was mine once this was over! I want her on her knees!"

"Shut up, Grant!" Lorenzo snarled, looking around frantically. "We need to kill my brother first, or none of us leave this city alive!"

Dante leaned over the banister, his face a mask of pure fury. "Lorenzo!" he roared, his voice echoing over the gunshots.

Everyone in the foyer stopped firing, looking up.

"Brother," Lorenzo stammered, his confidence evaporating as he looked into Dante’s eyes. "You... you shouldn't have trusted that corporate bitch. She’s the one who exposed us all!"

"You stole from the family, Lorenzo," Dante said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper that somehow carried across the entire room. "You aligned yourself with a weakling like Mercer because you couldn't face me like a man."

"Kill him!" Grant panicked, raising his shotgun toward the staircase.

Before Grant could pull the trigger, Dante fired, hitting Grant squarely in the shoulder. The force spun Grant around, sending him crashing into a glass display case, screaming in agony as shards pierced his skin.

But the distraction allowed Lorenzo to raise his own weapon. He aimed directly at Dante’s chest.

Elena didn't think. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the pedestal beside her and threw it down the stairs, hitting Lorenzo’s arm just as he fired. The bullet went wide, shattering the chandelier above them.

"Lev! Take the floor!" Dante commanded, leaping over the banister down into the foyer with unbelievable agility.

Within minutes, the remaining attackers were subdued, pinned down by Dante’s arriving reinforcements. Lorenzo was forced to his knees, his face bloodied, his hands bound behind his back. Grant lay groaning on the floor nearby, clutching his shattered shoulder, bleeding out onto the expensive rugs.

Dante walked over to Lorenzo, the barrel of his gun resting lightly against his brother's forehead.

"Any last words, Lorenzo?" Dante asked coldly.

"Wait!" Lorenzo begged, tears mixing with the blood on his face. "It wasn't my idea! I didn't want to steal from you, Dante! Someone set me up! They gave me the shell companies, they told me how to route the money so you wouldn't see it!"

Dante’s eyes narrowed. "Who?"

Lorenzo looked past Dante, his eyes widening in pure horror as he looked up the stairs at Elena. "It was... it was her."
