Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

The Hook: The most dangerous accountant in the world doesn't work for the government—she works for herself.Elena stood at the top of the stairs, her expression completely changing. The fear, the panic, the vulnerability that had defined her for the last four days vanished, replaced by a cold, serene calm.
Dante didn't lower his gun from Lorenzo’s head, but his gaze slowly shifted upward to meet hers. "Elena. What is he talking about?"
Grant groaned from the floor, looking up at her in confusion. "Elena...? What did you do?"
Elena slowly walked down the marble stairs, her heels clicking softly against the stone, a stark contrast to the chaos around her. She didn't look like a victim anymore. She looked like a queen surveying her court.
"Lorenzo is an idiot, Dante," she said, her voice smooth and devoid of any earlier tremor. "But he’s telling the truth. He didn't have the brains to steal six million dollars from you without getting caught. I gave him the blueprint."
Dante’s jaw tightened. "Why?"
"Because twelve million dollars went missing from the port authority," Elena explained, stopping three steps from the bottom. "Six million went to Lorenzo. Do you know where the other six million went?"
She smiled, a beautiful, terrifying expression.
"It went to an account registered to a private offshore trust in the Cayman Islands. A trust owned entirely by me."
Dante’s hand remained steady on the gun, but his eyes burned with a mixture of betrayal and dangerous fascination. "You used the audit to cover your own theft. You blew the whistle on the port authority to expose the politicians, knowing it would trigger a panic and draw my attention to Lorenzo."
"Exactly," Elena said, nodding. "I needed a scapegoat. I knew Lorenzo was greedy enough to take the bait if I slipped him the account details through an anonymous tip. And I knew that if he got caught, he’d run to his family's biggest rival—the Mercer family—for protection. I managed to clean out your subsidiary, destroy the corrupt politicians who were taxing my clients, and completely ruin my abusive ex-fiancé all in one move."
Grant stared at her, his face twisted in absolute horror. "You... you used me? You let me stalk you? You let me think I was winning?!"
"Of course I did, Grant," Elena said, looking down at him with utter contempt. "You were the perfect distraction. A man obsessed with control is incredibly easy to predict. You followed me to the gala exactly as I expected. You cornered me exactly where I wanted. And you gave me the perfect excuse to throw myself at the only man in Boston who could eliminate you for me."
She looked back at Dante. "The kiss in the corridor wasn't an emergency, Dante. It was my introduction."
Dante slowly lowered his gun from Lorenzo’s head, turning his full body toward her. The men in the room held their breath, waiting for the execution order. Nobody crossed the Moretti family and lived.
"You played a very dangerous game, Elena," Dante said, stepping closer to the stairs. "You brought war to my house. You stole from my family. What makes you think you leave this room alive?"
Elena reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, holding it between two fingers.
"Because the twelve million I took isn't just money, Dante. It’s the entire cryptographic ledger of the East Coast shipping lanes. Every corrupt judge, every dirty cop, every politician in your pocket is detailed on this drive. If my heart stops beating for more than one hour, the encryption drops, and the federal government gets a complete map of your entire empire."

She stepped off the final stair, standing directly in front of him.
"I didn't come here to be your victim, Dante. And I didn't come here to steal from you. I came to offer a merger."
