Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Shadows

The Hook: A hidden ledger reveals that the enemy isn't outside the gates—he's sitting at the dinner table.Living at the Moretti estate was like stepping into a gilded fortress. The walls were lined with Renaissance art, the hallways were guarded by silent men with hidden holsters, and every meal was served on silver platters. Yet, Elena spent eighteen hours a day buried in data.

Dante had kept his word. She had unredacted access to the family’s finances. For three days, she analyzed thousands of transactions, tracking the movement of millions across the globe. It was a masterpiece of financial camouflage, but Elena was a bloodhound for inconsistencies.

On the fourth night, she found it.

A series of recurring payments, totaling exactly six million dollars, disguised as maritime insurance premiums. The destination was an account held by a bank in Cyprus. The owner of the account wasn't an external rival or a corrupt politician. It was a corporate entity named Ares Logistics.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She checked the registration documents for Ares Logistics. The signature at the bottom was encrypted, but she broke the cipher within an hour.

The name on the document was Lorenzo Moretti—Dante’s younger brother.

"You look like you've found a ghost," a voice said from the doorway.

Elena jumped, closing her laptop halfway. Dante stood there, holding two glasses of dark amber liquid. He had discarded his tie, the top two buttons of his white shirt undone, giving him a rakish, dangerous look.

"I found the money," Elena said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dante walked over, setting a glass down in front of her. He looked at the half-closed screen. "Who is it?"

Elena hesitated. In her world, presenting a report meant a corporate reprimand or a lawsuit. In Dante's world, presenting this name meant an execution. "Dante... if I tell you, what happens to them?"

Dante’s expression hardened, the warmth leaving his features. "In my family, betrayal is paid for in blood. No exceptions. Who took it?"

Elena swallowed hard, her hand shaking as she opened the laptop fully, revealing the name Lorenzo Moretti flashing on the screen in stark, white text.

Dante stared at the screen for a long, agonizing minute. Not a single muscle in his face moved, but Elena saw the veins in his hands tighten around his glass until the crystal cracked with a sharp snap. Whiskey bled onto the mahogany desk.

"Dante..." she breathed, standing up quickly and grabbing a cloth to wipe his hand. He was bleeding from a small cut on his palm, but he didn't seem to notice the pain.

"He was always weak," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly devoid of emotion. "He wanted to build his own empire outside my shadow. He thought using the port authority would protect him from my suspicion."

Suddenly, the alarms throughout the estate began to blare—a low, rhythmic pulsing red light illuminating the room.

The door threw open, and Lev burst in, his expression grim. "Boss, we have a breach. The perimeter gate was rammed by three SUVs. They’re inside the courtyard. It’s Lorenzo’s men... and they aren't alone. The Mercer family’s private security is with them."

Dante didn't panic. He calmly wiped the blood from his hand onto a handkerchief. "Lorenzo knows he's been caught. He’s trying to eliminate the auditor before I can act on the information."

He turned to Elena, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her flush against his chest. "Stay behind me. If anyone comes through that door, you don't talk, you don't bargain. You run to the panic room behind the bookshelf. Do you understand?"

"Dante, I’m not leaving you," she said, surprised by her own fierce protectiveness.

A sudden explosion rocked the lower floor of the house, shattering the glass windows of the study. Gunfire erupted in the hallway—loud, rapid, and terrifyingly close.

Dante pulled a sleek silver firearm from his waistband, his eyes locking onto hers with a burning intensity. "You gave me a kiss to save your life, Elena. Now let me save yours."
