chapter 1

Rowan Bellamy had spent twelve months convincing himself that he had done the right thing.

Every interview.
Every charity gala.
Every magazine cover that called him Tennessee's Young Business Titan.

He smiled.

He shook hands.

He donated millions.

And every night, when the mansion became silent, he told himself the same lie.

"Maren betrayed me."

If he repeated it often enough, maybe one day it would finally become true.

The afternoon sun burned over the quiet countryside outside Franklin.

His black luxury SUV glided along the narrow rural road while soft classical music filled the cabin.

Beside him sat Tessa Whitmore.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfect.

Exactly the woman every newspaper claimed had "saved" Rowan after his painful divorce.

She rested one manicured hand on his arm.

"We should stop by the vineyard after lunch," she smiled.

"Our engagement photos deserve somewhere prettier."

Rowan barely answered.

For weeks he had been distracted.

Something about the upcoming wedding felt...

Wrong.

He couldn't explain it.

Whenever Tessa talked about forever, an invisible weight settled inside his chest.

Then suddenly she leaned toward the windshield.

"Oh my God..."

Her lips slowly curled upward.

"Rowan..."

"Pull over."

He frowned.

"What?"

"I said pull over."

Her excitement sounded almost childish.

He pressed the brake.

The SUV rolled onto the gravel shoulder.

Dust drifted into the summer air.

Then he saw her.

Maren.

Standing beside the road beneath an old oak tree.

For one impossible second...

Time stopped.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

The expensive dresses were gone.

The diamond earrings had disappeared.

Instead she wore faded blue jeans, old sandals and a loose gray shirt stained from long days under the sun.

A worn canvas bag rested on one shoulder.

Near her feet sat two large sacks filled with crushed aluminum cans.

She had been collecting recycling.

His throat tightened.

This wasn't the woman who used to host charity banquets attended by senators and CEOs.

This wasn't the woman who once helped build Bellamy Technologies from a tiny office with broken air conditioning.

This looked like someone surviving one day at a time.

But then...

He saw the babies.

Two tiny infants slept peacefully against her chest.

Twins.

Wrapped inside matching blue blankets.

Tiny fingers curled against their mother's shirt.

One little boy yawned.

The other squeezed Maren's necklace with astonishing strength.

Rowan's breathing stopped.

The older twin opened sleepy blue eyes.

Exactly like his.

Not similar.

Identical.

A strange chill crawled across his spine.

No...

That couldn't be possible.

Tessa laughed.

A bright, cruel laugh.

"Well..."

"I guess karma really works."

She lowered the passenger window.

"Hello, Maren!"

Several passing drivers slowed to watch.

A farmer stopped his truck nearby.

Two teenagers riding bicycles turned their heads.

The tiny roadside suddenly had an audience.

Tessa smiled wider.

"Looks like being caught stealing wasn't very profitable after all."

Maren didn't answer.

She simply adjusted one baby's blanket.

Completely calm.

Almost peaceful.

That silence irritated Tessa.

She reached inside her designer handbag.

Pulled out a crisp twenty-dollar bill.

And flicked it through the open window.

The bill floated gently before landing in the dirt.

"There."

"Buy your babies some formula."

The crowd watched.

Nobody moved.

Rowan felt something inside him crack.

Because Maren never looked at the money.

She looked directly into his eyes.

Not with hatred.

Not with anger.

But with something far worse.

Pity.

Deep...

Heartbreaking pity.

As though she were mourning someone who hadn't realized he was already dead inside.

Then she quietly whispered six words.

"So... you still trust her."

Nothing more.

No accusations.

No begging.

No tears.

She picked up her bags.

Adjusted the twins.

And slowly walked away.

Leaving the money lying in the dust.

The little boys never woke.

But one tiny hand reached backward...

Toward Rowan.

As though recognizing someone his mind could not yet remember.

Rowan couldn't breathe.

"Drive," Tessa snapped.

He obeyed.

But for the first time since their engagement...

He couldn't bring himself to hold her hand.

Because somewhere deep inside...

A question had just been born.

And questions...

Had a dangerous habit of becoming truth.

Three hours later...

Rowan sat alone inside his office.

The security footage from the roadside replayed over and over on his monitor.

He zoomed in.

Again.

And again.

Until finally he froze the image.

One twin had slipped slightly from his blanket.

A tiny birthmark appeared beneath his left ear.

A small crescent shape.

Exactly like Rowan's.

Exactly like Rowan's late father's.

His fingers began trembling.

No...

This wasn't coincidence.

This was blood.

Family.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

No voice came.

Only the faint sound of babies crying.

Then...

A woman whispered.

"You threw away more than your wife."

"You abandoned three children."

Click.

The call ended.

Three children?

Rowan stared at the phone.

His entire body turned cold.

Because Maren only had twins.

Didn't she?

May you like

Or had someone been lying to him...

Since the very beginning?
