CHAPTER 3 — The Child Hidden Behind the Perfect Smile

Rowan drove straight to Tessa's penthouse.
She greeted him with her usual effortless smile.
"I thought you were at the office."
"I found Daniel Pierce."
Her smile faltered for the first time.
"What did he say?"
Rowan walked inside without answering.
He placed the envelope on the dining table.
One by one, he spread the photographs across the polished marble.
The staged hotel pictures.
The fake bank transfers.
The security footage.
The planted necklace.
Every lie.
Tessa stared at them in silence.
Then, to Rowan's astonishment...
She laughed.
Not nervously.
Not apologetically.
Confidently.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Rowan looked at her in disbelief.
"You destroyed my marriage."
"No," she replied calmly.
"I simply helped you believe what you already wanted to believe."
Her words hit harder than a slap.
"You never trusted Maren," she continued.
"You trusted your pride."
Rowan's fists clenched.
"Where is my third child?"
For the first time, Tessa's expression changed.
Only slightly.
Enough for Rowan to notice.
"So..." she whispered.
"You finally know."
She walked to the large living-room window overlooking the city.
"You've been asking the wrong question."
Rowan stepped toward her.
"What does that mean?"
"The question isn't where the child is."
She turned slowly.
"It's who has been raising that child."
The room suddenly felt ice cold.
"What are you talking about?"
Tessa smiled—a smile so calm it was almost frightening.
"The baby never disappeared."
"You've seen that child dozens of times."
Rowan's heartbeat thundered.
"No..."
Tessa folded her arms.
"My sister died giving birth two years ago."
"You remember her little daughter?"
Rowan's knees nearly gave way.
Emma.
The quiet little girl who had attended every Bellamy family Christmas.
The child who always ran to hug him.
The one everyone believed was Tessa's orphaned niece.
He remembered the familiar blue eyes.
The tiny crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her ear.
The same one he had inherited from his father.
His entire world collapsed in one unbearable instant.
Emma wasn't Tessa's niece.
She wasn't an orphan.
She was his daughter.
His own flesh and blood had been living in his life for over a year...
Calling another man "Dad."
As Rowan staggered backward in shock, Tessa spoke one final sentence.
"You still don't know the worst part."
"The person who helped me hide her..."
"...was someone from your own family."
The doorbell rang.
Three slow knocks echoed through the silent penthouse.
Neither of them moved.
Then the front door opened.
An elderly woman stepped inside carrying a faded blue blanket.
Rowan's mother.
She looked at him with tears streaming down her face.

"I can't lie anymore," she whispered.
"It's time you learned why I helped steal your daughter."
