CHAPTER 10 — The Envelope That Changed Everything Again

Six months passed.

For the first time in years, Rowan Bellamy woke to something better than silence.

Laughter.

Emma chased her little brothers across the front yard while Maren stood on the porch, coffee in one hand, smiling as the morning sun painted the Tennessee hills gold.

The farmhouse was nothing like the mansion Rowan had sold.

Its floors creaked.

The roof leaked whenever it rained.

The kitchen was too small for five people.

Yet somehow, it felt more like home than every luxury house he had ever owned.

Bellamy Technologies had a new board.

Richard was serving a long prison sentence.

Tessa had disappeared from every headline after entering witness protection.

The nightmare seemed over.

Or so Rowan believed.

One rainy Thursday afternoon, a courier arrived carrying a single sealed envelope.

No return address.

No stamp.

Only five handwritten words.

For Rowan Bellamy. Alone.

Maren watched him carefully.

"You don't have to open it."

Rowan hesitated.

After everything they had survived, unexpected packages no longer felt harmless.

Still, curiosity won.

Inside was a yellowed photograph.

It showed Rowan's late father standing beside a smiling woman Rowan had never seen before.

Between them stood a little boy, perhaps six years old.

On the back of the photo, someone had written:

"The first heir was never lost."

Rowan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Another sheet of paper slipped from the envelope.

It contained only one sentence.

Ask your mother about Caleb.

His heartbeat quickened.

Caleb?

He had never heard that name in his life.

That evening, Rowan drove to the assisted-living center where Eleanor now lived after pleading guilty in court.

She looked frailer than ever.

The moment she saw the photograph, the color drained from her face.

"No..." she whispered.

"Who sent you this?"

"You tell me," Rowan replied.

"Who is Caleb?"

Eleanor's hands began to shake uncontrollably.

For nearly a minute, she couldn't speak.

Finally, she looked into her son's eyes.

"Before you were born..."

"...your father had another son."

Rowan stared at her in disbelief.

"What?"

"He was born out of wedlock."

"Your grandfather demanded the child disappear to protect the Bellamy name."

"And did he?"

Eleanor slowly shook her head.

"No."

"I thought he had."

She pointed weakly at the photograph.

"But if someone found Caleb..."

"...then Richard wasn't trying to steal the company for himself."

Rowan felt a chill race down his spine.

"For who?"

Eleanor whispered the answer.

"For the rightful first heir."

Before Rowan could ask another question, his phone rang.

It was Detective Mason.

"Rowan," he said urgently.

"We just received DNA results from evidence recovered in Richard's private safe."

"And?"

"There were two complete Bellamy family trees."

"The second one doesn't include your name."

Rowan's stomach dropped.

"What are you saying?"

Detective Mason took a slow breath.

"I'm saying everything you've believed about the Bellamy inheritance may have been built on a lie."

As Rowan looked again at the faded photograph, one impossible thought entered his mind.

If Caleb was still alive...

Then somewhere, another Bellamy had been watching everything unfold—

May you like

Waiting for the perfect moment to claim not only the fortune...

But the family.
