Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Port AlderThe private Mercedes Maybach glided silently through the rain-slicked streets of Port Alder, leaving the grand iron gates of Whitmore House far behind. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, the atmosphere was thick with a tense, magnetic history that had been buried for half a decade.

Claire sat by the window, watching the blurred neon lights of the waterfront bleed into the dark, churning waters of the bay. Her fingers still tingled from the adrenaline of the confrontation.

Julian sat beside her, not saying a word, letting her process the storm she had just unleashed. He didn’t offer empty platitudes or forced sympathy. He simply reached into the center console, pulled out a crystal tumbler filled with single-malt scotch, and slid it gently across the leather armrest toward her.

“You haven’t changed a bit, Claire,” Julian murmured softly, breaking the silence. “Still waiting until the exact, perfect second to detonate the charge.”

Claire took the glass, inhaling the rich amber scent before taking a small sip that burned warmly down her throat. “I waited four years, Julian. Four years of listening to him tell me I was fragile, theatrical, and incapable of managing my own family’s legacy.”

“Four years too long,” Julian replied, his voice low and intense. He turned his head to look at her, his silver-blue eyes catching the dim dashboard light. “When you called me this morning... I thought you were finally going to ask for a standard, quiet divorce settlement. I didn't expect you to hand me a loaded gun and ask me to pull the trigger on his entire financial existence.”

“He wore my dead mother’s pearls on his mistress’s neck,” Claire said, her voice devoid of emotion, which made it infinitely more terrifying. “He crossed a line that can’t be un-crossed. And the Whitmore Trust gala is this Saturday. I wanted him stripped naked in front of every elite socialite in the Pacific Northwest before he even had a chance to walk down that red carpet.”

Julian let out a low, appreciative chuckle. “Oh, don't worry about Saturday. The guest list has already been updated. Every major investor, board member, and federal prosecutor in Washington state has received a special invitation to watch Damien Cross try to explain why his corporate accounts have been frozen for grand-scale embezzlement and foundation fraud.”

Claire turned to look at him, her eyebrows raising slightly. “You moved fast.”

“I’ve been waiting five years for an invitation back into your life, Claire,” Julian said, his gaze holding hers with an intensity that made the air in the car feel suddenly scarce. “You didn't think I was just sitting around waiting for a corporate merger, did you?”

Before Claire could answer, her phone buzzed violently against the leather seat.

An incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted number.

Julian glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening. “Answer it. Let’s see how the king handles losing his crown.”

Claire picked up the phone and pressed accept.

Damien’s furious, sweat-stained face filled the screen. He was standing outside in the pouring rain on the grand front steps of Whitmore House, his designer tuxedo soaked through, holding his phone with a shaking hand.

“Claire! Answer me right now! The private security guards just locked the smart-gates! They won't let me back inside!” Damien screamed over the roar of the thunder. “Sienna is having a panic attack in the car! What kind of sick game are you playing?!”

Claire leaned closer to the camera, her face calm, radiant, and utterly merciless.

“It’s not a game, Damien,” Claire whispered into the microphone. “It’s checkmate. Enjoy the rain.”

She hung up before he could scream another word.
