Chapter 5 - The Gala of the CenturySaturday night arrived with the crushing weight of a theatrical storm. The annual Whitmore Children’s Trust Gala was traditionally the most exclusive social event of the year in Port Alder, but tonight, it wasn't just a charity fundraiser—it was the social execution of Damien Cross.

The grand ballroom of the historic Bellevue Hotel glittered under ten thousand crystal chandeliers. Men in immaculate black-tie tuxedos and women draped in cascading diamonds stood in hushed, buzzing clusters around the champagne towers, whispering about the morning news alerts flashing across their phones.
Federal authorities seize Damien Cross’s primary holdings.
Whitmore Industries announces complete restructuring under sole heiress Claire Whitmore.
At the center of the grand staircase stood Claire herself.
She wore a breathtaking, floor-length emerald-silk gown that caught the light like deep ocean water, perfectly hugging her tall, elegant frame. Her hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, and around her neck rested a familiar, glowing string of luminous white pearls—restored to their rightful place, shining with quiet, untouchable majesty.
The double oak doors at the end of the ballroom opened, and a hush fell over the entire room like a blanket.
Julian Vance walked in, looking devastatingly handsome in his custom tuxedo, holding his arm out casually. Claire placed her hand on his forearm, and together, they began their slow, graceful descent down the grand staircase.
Every eye in the room was fixed on them. Flashbulbs from private media photographers popped like distant lightning storms.
“You look breathtaking,” Julian murmured, leaning in slightly as they reached the final step.
“Thank you,” Claire replied with a faint, knowing smile, scanning the crowd. “Is our special guest locked out?”
“Worse,” Julian whispered smoothly. “He made bail three hours ago using some hidden emergency liquid reserves he thought we didn't find. He’s outside right now, and security is letting him through the back service doors. He thinks he can make a scene and save his reputation.”
Claire’s smile didn’t falter. “Let him try. I’ve been waiting for a front-row seat.”
Just as they stepped onto the polished parquet floor to open the gala’s first dance, the heavy service doors at the side of the ballroom slammed open.

Damien Cross staggered into the room.
His tuxedo was rumpled, his hair unkempt, and the arrogant, untouchable glow of the city’s most feared investor was entirely gone, replaced by the wild, desperate eyes of a man who had lost everything.
