Chapter 14 - The Bitter PillIn his cramped, fluorescent-lit cubicle on the west side, Ethan Cole stared at his computer screen in sheer disbelief.

A notification from Bellweather Journeys flashed in his inbox: Invoice #9824 - Seychelles Private Island Takeover.

The total figure was staggering—nearly triple what Apex Global had budgeted for the retreat. And beneath the total, written in crisp, uncompromising legal legibility, was the clause:

All bookings secured via Bellweather Journeys require full upfront payment from corporate accounts. No modifications, name substitutions, or cancellations permitted under any circumstances.

Ethan broke out in a cold sweat. He knew exactly whose hand had drafted that clause. It was Clare’s signature style—bulletproof, impenetrable, and completely unforgiving.

He picked up his desk phone and dialed the agency’s direct line, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Bellweather Journeys, executive concierge desk," a crisp, professional voice answered. "How may I direct your call?"

"Yes, hello, this is Ethan Cole with Apex Global Holdings," he blurted out, his voice tight with panic. "I’m calling regarding Invoice 9824. There seems to be an administrative error on the pricing structure, and we need to discuss a name substitution for the primary reservation holder—"

"One moment, Mr. Cole," the agent interrupted smoothly.

A brief click sounded on the line, followed by a moment of dead silence. Then, a voice spoke—not an agent, but Clare herself.

"There are no errors in our billing, Ethan," Clare said, her tone cool, effortless, and entirely detached.

Ethan froze, the phone slipping slightly in his sweaty palm. "Clare... look, I didn't know this account was routed through your agency. But surely we can work something out? A corporate discount? And regarding the guest list... I need to ensure my name is locked in as the primary retreat lead."

"The invoice is non-negotiable," Clare replied evenly. "And as for your guest list, our portal policy remains strictly enforced: anyone attempting to swap names or alter bookings without primary authorization will find their reservation instantly voided."

"Clare, please," Ethan whispered, humiliation burning in his throat. "I need this contract to go through. My job depends on this retreat. If I screw this up, I'm out."

"That sounds like a logistical failure on your part, Ethan," Clare said softly. "Fortunately, at Bellweather Journeys, we don't manage other people's failures. We only design successful journeys."
