Chapter 26 - The Final ExitEthan stared at her, his mouth opening to speak, but no words came out.

The crushing weight of his own choices finally settled onto his shoulders with absolute, inescapable finality. He realized, with a blinding flash of clarity, that the gulf between them wasn't financial, or professional, or social—it was a chasm of character that no bridge could ever cross.
Before he could utter another syllable, two uniformed security guards appeared quietly at the end of the corridor, their hands resting politely on their utility belts.
"Is everything all right here, Miss Bennett?" the lead guard asked, casting a stern, professional eye toward Ethan.
Clare looked at Ethan one last time. The anger, the betrayal, and the lingering echoes of a failed marriage were entirely gone from her chest, replaced by the crisp, clean air of total liberation.
"Everything is fine, officers," Clare said smoothly, turning her back on him without a shred of hesitation. "Just an uninvited guest who was already leaving."
"Right this way, sir," the guard instructed firmly, stepping toward Ethan.
Ethan didn't resist. He bowed his head, turned around, and walked down the service corridor toward the back exit of the Plaza Hotel, swallowed up by the cold winter night.
Clare walked back into the grand ballroom, where the string quartet was playing a lively, uplifting waltz.

"Never better, Harrison," Clare smiled, raising her flute toward the sparkling chandeliers. "Never better."
