Chapter 5 - The Master KeyMilo snatched the locket from Isabella's hand, popping open the tiny latch with a specialized jeweler's screwdriver. He plugged the micro-chip directly into an adapter port on his laptop.

The screen flashed bright blue. A prompt appeared: BIOMETRIC VOICE MATCH VERIFIED.
"It's her!" Milo yelled, slamming his hand on the desk. "The master decryption key is unlocking! The dead-man's switch has been neutralized!"
Down in the cellar, we heard a sudden, violent crash, followed by shouting. Lev, the security chief, came running up the basement stairs with his radio crackling.
"Boss! Dominic tried to break his bonds using a sharp piece of the chair leg. He rushed the guards. We had to put him down."
Vincent didn't flinch. He walked over to the window, watching the rain begin to fall again against the dark glass—just like the night Sofia died. The threat was neutralized. The empire was safe. But more importantly, the cloud of suspicion and terror that had suffocated his daughter for eleven months had finally been blown away by the wind.
Vincent turned around, walked back to Isabella, and scooped her up into his arms. He buried his face in her hair, his massive shoulders shaking as he wept tears of pure relief.
"You saved us, Bella," he choked out. "You saved your family."
Isabella wrapped her small arms around his neck, resting her head against his shoulder. Then she looked over at Ellie, who had just wandered into the parlor rubbing her eyes.
"Can we go eat pancakes now?" Isabella asked softly.

Vincent let out a wet, genuine laugh—the first real laugh heard in this house in over a year.
"Pancakes," Vincent said, kissing her forehead. "As many as you want."
