Chapter 8 - Whispers in the GardenThree weeks later, the estate felt less like a fortress and more like a home. The heavy wrought-iron gates were often left propped open during the afternoons, letting the neighborhood breeze drift through the courtyard where the girls played tag near the fountains.

Isabella had returned to her normal routine, though she still carried Sofia’s white swan music box wherever she went. The dark shadows under her eyes were gone, replaced by the vibrant flush of a healthy, happy seven-year-old child.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Vincent, Isabella, Ellie, and I walked through the sprawling estate gardens, inspecting the newly planted rose beds that replaced the old, overgrown shrubs near the east wing.

Isabella suddenly stopped in front of a white stone bench where Sofia used to sit and read during the warm summer months.

"Daddy," Isabella called out, pointing down at the base of the stone bench.

Vincent hurried over, kneeling beside her. "What is it, Bella?"

Isabella reached down and brushed away a layer of damp mulch. Half-buried in the soil was a small, weather-worn brass key—larger than the one that opened the music box, but forged with the exact same intricate swan insignia.

Vincent picked it up, turning it over in his calloused palms. He looked puzzled for a moment before a soft, knowing smile touched his lips.

"What does it open, Daddy?" Isabella asked, her eyes wide with innocent curiosity.

Vincent looked up from the key, glanced toward the heavy oak doors of the estate library, and then out toward the horizon where the sun was beginning its slow descent over the lake.

"It opens a very special lock, my little bird," Vincent whispered, pulling both Isabella and Ellie into a tight, protective embrace. "A door to a place your mother and I built a long time ago, where we can finally start our real story."
