Chapter 2 - Shadows in Lake ForestThe estate went into immediate lockdown. Vincent’s security chief, a hulking ex-Mossad operative named Lev, locked the perimeter gates and cut all external communications. Within twenty minutes, Dominic was bound to a heavy mahogany chair in the estate's subterranean wine cellar—a room built for aging vintage reds, now serving as a tribunal for a traitor.

I stood near the heavy iron door with Ellie sleeping soundly in a guest room upstairs, guarded by two trusted women from the kitchens. Vincent sat across from Dominic, spinning the small micro-SD card between his thick fingers.

"You were like a brother to me, Dom," Vincent said softly, his voice dangerously low. "When my father died on the docks, you helped me balance the books. When the syndicate tried to muscle us out of Cicero, you drafted the contracts that buried them. Why Sofia?"

Dominic spat a mix of blood and saliva onto the pristine tile floor. He let out a harsh, broken chuckle. "Because you were going soft, Vincent. Sofia made you soft. Every time a shipment came in, you wanted to donate to orphanages or build community centers. You wanted out of the life. But empires aren't built on charity. I kept us rich, and I kept us alive while you played suburban family man."

"She was my wife," Vincent hissed.

"She found the offshore accounts three days before she died," Dominic sneered, his eyes flashing with manic defiance. "She told me she was taking Isabella and going to the authorities. She said you deserved to know the truth about who was skimming from the family accounts. So I made sure she took that drive down Route 41 in the middle of a storm. Only I didn't count on a seven-year-old child hiding under the back seat blanket, watching the whole thing through the crack in the floorboards."

Vincent didn't yell. He stood up, drew a heavy steel-barreled revolver from his holster, and placed it on the oak barrel table between them.

"The micro-SD card," Vincent said. "What's on it?"

"Evidence," Dominic whispered, his bravado finally cracking as he stared at the gun. "Every wire transfer, every bribe paid to federal judges, every name of every politician on our payroll. If I die, an encrypted dead-man's switch automatically uploads the whole file to the FBI, the IRS, and every rival syndicate from Chicago to Miami. You kill me, Vincent, and your entire empire burns to ash by midnight."
