Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the MachineWe needed to crack that card before Dominic’s dead-man's switch could trigger. Vincent called in his private tech specialist, a jittery young hacker named Milo who lived in a basement apartment in Pilsen and owed Vincent his life.

Milo arrived within the hour, carrying a ruggedized laptop and a tangled nest of cables. He set up shop on the long mahogany dining table while Vincent paced behind him like a caged tiger.

"Can you bypass the trigger?" Vincent demanded, watching the scrolling green text on Milo's screen.

"It's sophisticated, Mr. Moretti," Milo muttered, pushing his thick glasses up his nose. "It's pinging a server in the Cayman Islands every four hours. If it doesn't receive a heartbeat signal from Dominic's private terminal by midnight, it detonates the data bomb. We have roughly two hours and fifteen minutes."

Down in the cellar, Dominic was laughing. We could hear his muffled taunts echoing through the heating vents. He knew he had the upper hand. Even if Vincent killed him, the empire would fall.

I brought Vincent a cup of black coffee. He didn't touch it. His eyes were bloodshot, fixed on the screen where a loading bar crawled at a agonizingly slow pace—14%, 15%, 16%.

"It's my fault," Vincent murmured, rubbing his face with calloused hands. "I brought him into our home. I let him play with Isabella. She had to watch him smile at her every day at Sunday dinner, knowing he killed her mother, and she couldn't even scream because she was too terrified of what he'd do to me."

"She spoke today, Vincent," I said quietly, placing a hand on his massive forearm. "That means she's starting to fight back. And so are you."

"Look at this," Milo suddenly gasped, tapping a key frantically. "The card isn't just an archive of financial crimes. There's a secondary partition. It's password-protected with a biometric voice hash."
