Chapter 11 - THE GHOST OF MADISON’S PASTThe federal indictment against Madison Harrington didn’t just make local news—it hit the front page of the national financial wires. “Heiress to Restaurant Dynasty Faces Federal Wire Fraud Charges,” read the bold headline across the digital boards in Times Square.

I was sitting in my new corner office on the forty-second floor, reviewing quarterly projections for the hospitality group that had absorbed the remains of Harrington Enterprises, when my private line rang.

It wasn't an assistant. It was a blocked number.

"Claire," a voice hissed through the speaker. It was brittle, shaking, and devoid of the arrogant amusement I had heard at the anniversary dinner. "Are you happy now? Are you satisfied that my life is completely destroyed?"

I leaned back in my leather ergonomic chair, looking out at the panoramic view of the city skyline.

"Hello, Madison," I said smoothly. "I thought your lawyers advised you not to make unmonitored calls while out on bail."

A ragged sob echoed on the other end of the line. "They’re seizing my apartment. They’re taking my car, my clothes, everything. The court froze my personal accounts. I have nothing left, Claire. Not even a credit card that works at a grocery store."

"That's terrible," I replied, my tone entirely flat. "Have you tried looking for coupons?"

A sharp gasp of pure rage met my words. "You cold-hearted monster! You planned this! You knew about the audit months before you dropped that folder on the table!"

"I audited what you stole," I corrected her quietly. "If you hadn't treated company funds like your personal boutique allowance while sneering at people who actually worked for a living, you wouldn't be standing in the ruins of your own making. Goodbye, Madison. Lose this number."

I hung up, blocked the signal, and went back to my spreadsheets. Some people don't fall from grace; they simply gravity-check the illusions they built.
