Chapter 1 - The Threshold of SecretsThe metallic click of the heavy brass lock echoing down the empty corridor sounded like a gunshot in the silent house. David stood paralyzed, his knees trembling under the sheer weight of what he had just discovered. Five-year-old Lily sat huddled on the worn fabric of the living room sofa, her frail arms wrapped tightly around her infant brother, Tommy. The air in the room was thick with the suffocating scent of dust, stale air, and fear.

"Lily, look at me," David pleaded, his voice cracking as he knelt before his daughter. Every instinct screamed at him to rush toward that forbidden door at the end of the hall, yet he forced himself to stay grounded for the children's sake. "Did Mommy lock that door?"

Lily slowly nodded, her big, hollow eyes brimming with fresh tears. Her bottom lip trembled. "She said... she said it was for our own good. She said the bad men would find us if we made a sound."

David’s blood turned to ice. Bad men? He had left behind a wife, Clara, whom he believed to be the embodiment of warmth and maternal safety. They lived in a quiet, upscale suburban neighborhood where doors were rarely locked, let alone barricaded from the inside with deadbolts and heavy iron chains. Clara’s parting words at the airport two weeks ago echoed mockingly in his brain: “Have a safe trip, darling. We’ll be right here waiting for you, safe and sound.”

A sharp, metallic groan echoed from behind the mysterious door, shattering the stillness.

Clack.

Something—or someone—was moving inside.

David rose slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He took three agonizing steps toward the hallway, his boots making no sound on the hardwood floor.

"Dad, no!" Lily shrieked, her voice pitching into a terrified panic. "Don't open it! She'll know!"

Before David could respond, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. The screen flashed with an incoming text message from an unknown number. His hands shook as he unlocked the device. The message contained a single photo taken from a camera angle he didn't recognize, showing him standing right where he was, staring down the hallway.

The caption read: "Welcome home, David. You shouldn't have come back early."
