Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe murmurs in the ballroom faded into a tense, suffocating silence as Clara stood up, dusting off her apron with trembling hands. Vanessa sneered, turning her back on me to address the crowd of vultures masquerading as family and friends.

"Let's raise a glass," Vanessa announced, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as a waiter handed her a flute of champagne. "To recovery, to adaptation, and... to difficult transitions. After all, running a multi-million-dollar tech empire requires two working legs, not just a stubborn spirit."

A few sycophants laughed. My cousin Marcus chimed in, "Hear, hear! It's time someone talked about reality. We can't let sentimental pity sink the company stock."

My hand remained motionless on the cold leather armrest. But beneath the gray blanket, my fingers flexed. They thought they were watching a tragedy. They didn't know they were standing on a trapdoor.

"Uncle Martin," I said quietly, cutting through the chatter.

Martin flinched, nearly spilling his drink. "Yes, son?"

"You've been very quiet about the upcoming board restructuring," I noted, locking eyes with him. "Especially for someone who tried to quietly acquire three million shares of my personal stock portfolio three days after my hospital admission."

Martin’s face drained of color. The glass in his hand trembled, clinking sharply against his ring. "That... that was an administrative error by my broker. You know how these things go, Arthur."

"Of course," I replied smoothly, a faint smirk playing at the corner of my lips. "Errors happen. Just like the upcoming federal audit on your offshore accounts."

Vanessa spun back around, her eyes narrowing into slits. "What kind of paranoid delusions are you spewing now? The accident fried more than your spine; it ruined your mind."

"Maybe," I whispered. "Or maybe I'm finally seeing things clearly."
