Chapter 1 - THE HUNDRED THOUSAND SHARESThe air in the ballroom felt suddenly thin. Ryan’s hand tightened around the stem of his champagne flute so hard I thought the crystal would snap.

"Eleven weeks ago," I repeated, my voice steady, carrying easily across the hushed expanse of the room as hundreds of pairs of eyes watched us like spectators at a Roman execution. "You signed a personal guaranty using Caldwell Capital's operating reserve as collateral to bail out your private real estate venture in Queens. A venture that, as of this morning, has officially defaulted."

Ryan’s face lost the last trace of its color, turning a pasty, sickly gray. "That's... that's impossible. That loan isn't due for another six months. The board—"

"The board hasn't seen the amended terms because you hid them behind a shell corporation," I interrupted, stepping just a fraction closer. "A shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under Vanessa’s maiden name. Clever, Ryan. Except for one small detail: my father’s legal team drafted the original holding agreement for Caldwell Capital six years ago. Every loophole you tried to exploit was one we left there intentionally, waiting to see if you were ever foolish enough to step into it."

Vanessa flinched, pulling back as if Ryan carried a physical contagion. The murmurs in the crowd grew louder, sharper, morphing from polite shock into outright murmurs of scandal.

Ryan looked wildly past me, his eyes locking onto Luca DeSantis. "Luca—you know how these boutique investments work. It's a temporary liquidity crunch. Caldwell Capital is solid. We've talked about merging portfolios—"

Luca didn't even blink. He adjusted his cuffs, his expression completely devoid of warmth. "Caldwell Capital was solid, Ryan. Two minutes ago. But a CEO who commits corporate fraud to fund his mistress's lifestyle while leveraging his own company's operating funds isn't a partner. He's a liability."

"And as of ten minutes ago," my father added, his deep voice cutting through the noise like a blade, "the Moretti family's holding trust has exercised its priority lien on all Caldwell assets. Every desk, every server, every brick of your corporate headquarters now belongs to us."

Ryan stared at us, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The man who had entered the ballroom like a king now looked like a ghost trapped in a burning house.

"Enjoy the party, Ryan," I whispered, turning my back on him with slow, deliberate grace. "It's the last one you'll ever host."
