Chapter 6 - The Aftermath in the Newsroom

By 8:00 PM that evening, the story had broken across local Nashville news channels and was already beginning to trend nationally on financial news networks like Bloomberg and CNBC.

BREAKING: HALE MERIDIAN INDUSTRIES CEO DANIEL HALE ARRESTED IN MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL; FORMER EXECUTIVES UNCOVER $84M FRAUD SCHEME.

The anchor on screen was reading from a rapidly updating teleprompter, her voice clipped and professional. Behind her, a high-resolution graphic displayed side-by-side mugshots of Daniel Hale and Vanessa Cole, both looking shell-shocked and stripped of their corporate arrogance under the harsh fluorescent lighting of the police precinct booking room.

In Room 412 of St. Catherine Medical Center, the television was muted.

I sat propped up against the pillows, eating a bowl of lukewarm chicken broth while watching the silent ticker scroll across the bottom of the screen. My blood pressure had stabilized to a healthy 120 over 80, and the rhythmic contractions had completely ceased under Dr. Patel’s watchful care.

My phone, resting on the bedside table, was buzzing incessantly. Notifications from LinkedIn, corporate email accounts, financial journalists, and distant relatives who hadn’t spoken to me in years were flooding in by the second.

I ignored every single one of them.

Instead, I watched the door open quietly to reveal Marcus Vance, accompanied by a notary public and a young corporate communications associate holding a secure tablet.

"Good evening, Claire," Marcus said, stepping into the room with a brisk, energetic stride. "I see you’re keeping up with current events."

"It's hard not to," I replied, gesturing toward the muted television screen where a live aerial shot of police cruisers outside Hale Meridian headquarters was playing out. "Has the board issued the official press release yet?"

"It went out five minutes ago," the young associate chimed in, stepping forward and handing me the tablet. "We announced that Daniel Hale has been permanently terminated for cause, and that you, Claire Hale, have officially assumed full operational control as Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Hale Meridian Industries, effective immediately."

I glanced at the glowing screen. There was my name at the top of the corporate governance page, backed by the full voting majority of the enterprise my father had spent his life building.

"And Vanessa Cole?" I asked.

"Fired, blacklisted, and facing felony charges for grand larceny, financial fraud, and aggravated assault," Marcus said smoothly, taking a seat in the visitor chair Daniel had occupied earlier that afternoon. "Her legal representation tried to file for a rapid bond hearing an hour ago, but the judge denied it outright given the severity of the offshore flight risks we documented. She’s spending the night in a holding cell at the Davidson County Detention Center."

Good. No cashmere coats in a holding cell. No diamond bracelets to hide behind. Just the raw, unvarnished consequence of her own greed.

"The board wants to schedule a formal press conference for Monday morning at corporate headquarters," Marcus continued, watching me closely. "They want you to address the shareholders and outline the restructuring plan. But given your medical status—"

"We'll do it via secure live video link from the hospital boardroom," I interrupted calmly. "I want the shareholders to see me right here, holding my ground, demonstrating that Hale Meridian isn't going to stutter or fall apart just because we pruned a diseased branch."

Marcus grinned, a look of profound admiration crossing his weathered features. "Your father would be standing right here applauding you, Claire. You have his exact steel."
