Chapter 3 - THE SINS OF THE FATHER

Dante’s grip tightened, his knuckles turning white. Elise Vance. The estranged, supposedly dead daughter of Victor Vance, the ruthless patriarch of the rival Syndicate. Rumor had it she died in a boarding school fire ten years ago.

"Victor thinks I died," Elise said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as she looked down at the gun pressed into her ribs. "Because I set the fire. He tried to turn me into his perfect little assassin. He succeeded—he just didn't realize I’d turn my sights on him."

Dante slowly lowered his gun, his mind racing. The pieces were falling into place. The diner near the docks wasn't a hiding place; it was an observation post. She was watching his territory, waiting for the perfect moment to strike at her father's operations.

"Why the waitress act?" Dante asked, stepping back but keeping his guard up.

"Because nobody looks at the girl wiping down tables," she said, adjusting her jacket. "Victor's men come into that diner every week. They talk. They boast. They drop names, dates, and shipping manifests. And tonight, your cousin Antonio dropped a bomb. He told my father's enforcers exactly where you’d be tonight, and that he wanted your head on a plate by morning so he could take over the Ravelli family."

Dante felt a cold fury wash over him. Family was everything in his world. To be betrayed by his own blood was a mortal sin.

"If Antonio has turned," Dante said, "my safe houses are compromised. My guards are no longer mine."

"Exactly," Elise said, walking toward a heavy steel door at the back of the factory. "Which means you have no one left to trust. Except the girl who just saved your life."

She pushed the door open, revealing a highly sophisticated, hidden command center buried deep within the factory's concrete bowels. Monitors flashed with live security feeds of Harbor City, digital maps of the shipping docks, and encrypted data streams. On the central table lay a blueprint of Dante’s own mansion.

Dante walked over, his eyes narrowing. "You've been planning to take down my entire empire."

"No," Elise said, standing across from him, the glow of the monitors casting sharp shadows over her beautiful, lethal face. "I've been planning to take down his. But since your cousin decided to play Judas, our goals just aligned. You want your empire back. I want my father dead. Do we have a deal, Don Ravelli?"

Dante looked at her extended hand. It was smooth, but he could feel the underlying calluses from years of handling weapons. She was a weapon. And in his world, you either wielded the weapon, or you were killed by it.

May you like

"A deal," Dante said, shaking her hand. "But if you cross me, Elise, I don’t care who your father is. I will personally bury you."

She smiled, and for the first time, Dante felt a genuine chill of fear. "I'd expect nothing less."
