Chapter 5 - THE GRAND SHOWDOWN

Chaos erupted.
Antonio lunged behind the high table, drawing his gun, while Victor’s personal bodyguards opened fire. The wealthy guests screamed, scattering like rats as the ballroom turned into a war zone.
Dante moved with lethal grace, throwing a table over to create cover for himself and Elise. "Go for Victor!" Dante shouted over the din of gunfire. "Antonio is mine!"
Elise didn't need to be told twice. She vaulted over the velvet couch, her crimson dress tearing slightly to reveal a hidden thigh holster. She fired two rounds, dropping Victor’s lead bodyguards before they could even aim.
Victor fled through the rear service doors, terrified for the first time in his life. He wasn't running from the mafia; he was running from his own creation.
Meanwhile, Dante pursued Antonio into the grand kitchen. The stainless steel counters reflected the harsh fluorescent lights. Antonio was panicked, firing blindly behind him.
"Dante! Wait! We can talk about this!" Antonio screamed, his back hitting a industrial refrigerator. He was out of bullets, his slide locked back.
Dante walked up to him slowly, his face devoid of emotion. He reached out, grabbed Antonio by the throat, and slammed him against the steel wall. With his other hand, Dante brutally twisted Antonio's finger, ripping his ruby signet ring back off his hand.
"You broke the family vow, Antonio," Dante whispered.
"Please, Dante! It was Victor! He threatened my family!"
"I was your family," Dante said.
A single shot rang out in the kitchen. Antonio fell limp, sliding down the stainless steel to the floor. Dante wiped a drop of blood off his cheek, reloaded his weapon, and headed toward the roof where Victor’s helicopter was stationed.
Up on the helipad, the rain was blinding. The helicopter's blades were already spinning, creating a deafening roar.
Victor Vance was scrambling toward the open door of the chopper when a bullet struck the tarmac right in front of his feet. He spun around.
Elise stood there, her red dress soaked through, her hair plastered to her face. She looked like an avenging angel of death.
"It ends here, Victor," she shouted over the roar of the engines.
Victor realized he couldn't escape. He drew a small, silver derringer from his sleeve, his face contorting into a mask of pure hatred. "I made you, girl! Everything you are, you owe to me! You don't have the guts to kill your own blood!"
"You didn't make me a killer, Victor," she said, raising her gun with a perfectly steady hand. "You just gave me a target."
A shot echoed across the rooftop. But it didn't come from Elise's gun.
Victor gasped, looking down at his chest where a massive exit wound had just opened up. He fell backward, tumbling off the edge of the helipad into the dark abyss of the city below.
Elise spun around, her eyes wide with shock.
Standing at the entrance of the roof was Dante, his smoking sniper rifle lowered. He had taken the shot from the doorway.
She stared at him, her chest heaving. "Why did you do that? He was my target."
May you like
Dante walked over to her, discarding the rifle, and stood close enough to feel the heat radiating off her skin. "Because I couldn't let his blood be on your hands forever. Some sins are meant to be shared, Elise."
For a long moment, they just stared at each other in the pouring rain, the boundaries between hunter and prey completely shattered.
