CHAPTER 1: "The Goodbye That Changed Everything"

The beeping machines inside Room 214 echoed like a countdown to the end.
Daniel Carter hadn't slept in three days. His eyes were bloodshot, his beard unshaven, and his hands trembled as he held the tiny fingers of his eight-year-old daughter, Lily.
The doctors had already delivered the words no parent should ever hear.
"There is nothing more we can do."
A rare illness had stolen Lily's strength one painful day at a time. Every specialist had failed. Every experimental treatment had ended in disappointment. Daniel had sold his house, emptied his savings, and borrowed money from anyone willing to help.
None of it was enough.
Now the hospital room had become a place where hope quietly went to die.
Daniel leaned closer, tears running freely down his face.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart," he whispered. "Daddy couldn't save you."
Lily slowly opened her eyes.
Weak...
Fragile...
But somehow, she smiled.
Instead of saying goodbye, she squeezed his hand with surprising strength.
Then she whispered seven words that froze the blood in his veins.
"Dad... don't trust Aunt Emily anymore..."
Daniel's heart stopped.
"What did you say?"
Lily tried to speak again, but exhaustion stole her voice.
Before she could explain, the hospital room door swung open.
Emily—Daniel's younger sister—rushed inside carrying flowers. She wore a worried expression, but the moment she noticed Daniel staring at her, her smile vanished for a split second.
A tiny moment.
Barely noticeable.
But Daniel saw it.
Emily asked softly, "How is she?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he remembered something Lily had said months earlier.
"Daddy... Aunt Emily always gives me medicine when you're not here."
At the time, he thought nothing of it.
Now...
Those innocent words suddenly sounded terrifying.
Emily walked toward Lily's bed.
Before she could touch the little girl, Daniel instinctively stepped between them.
Emily looked confused.
"What are you doing?"
Daniel forced a smile.
"Nothing."

But inside...
A father who had been preparing to lose his daughter suddenly realized he might have been standing beside the person responsible for her suffering all along.
