CHAPTER 4: "The Second Will Changed Everything"

The courtroom fell silent as the elderly attorney slowly approached the witness stand.

"My name is Richard Bennett," he began. "I represented the Carter family for nearly thirty years."

Every eye followed the thick, sealed envelope in his hands.

Emily's face suddenly lost all color.

"What is that?" her lawyer demanded.

Richard looked directly at the judge.

"This is Mr. Henry Carter's final will... signed six months before his death. It was ordered to remain sealed unless there was evidence that someone attempted to harm Lily Carter for financial gain."

A wave of whispers spread through the courtroom.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"My father... wrote another will?"

Richard nodded.

"He feared someone in the family would eventually discover Lily's inheritance."

Emily's breathing became uneven.

"No..." she whispered.

"No, that's impossible."

The judge authorized the envelope to be opened.

Richard unfolded the document and read aloud.

"To my beloved granddaughter Lily... if anyone is found guilty of manipulating, threatening, harming, or attempting to benefit from her death, that individual shall receive absolutely nothing from my estate."

Emily's eyes widened.

Richard continued reading.

"Furthermore, that person's own inheritance shall be transferred to the Lily Carter Children's Foundation, created in Lily's name to help critically ill children receive life-saving treatment."

The courtroom exploded.

Emily shot to her feet.

"NO!"

She slammed both hands onto the defense table.

"He lied to me!"

Everyone turned toward her.

She realized too late what she had just admitted.

Tears streamed down her face.

"My father told me..." she cried. "He told me the money would be mine! He promised me!"

Daniel froze.

"My father?"

Richard slowly removed another folder from his briefcase.

"There is one more piece of evidence."

Inside was a collection of handwritten letters.

"They were written by Henry Carter during the final weeks of his life."

Richard handed one to Daniel.

His hands shook as he unfolded the yellowed paper.

The first sentence stole the air from his lungs.

"Daniel... if you are reading this, then I have already failed to stop the monster I helped create."

Daniel's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

The letter continued.

"Emily wasn't born greedy. I made her that way. I spoiled her, protected her, and taught her that money solved every problem. If she ever hurts Lily... know that I am responsible too."

Daniel couldn't hold back the tears.

His father had known.

He had seen the darkness growing inside Emily long before anyone else.

But the biggest shock was still waiting.

Richard cleared his throat.

"There is one final instruction."

Everyone leaned forward.

"If Lily survives..."

"...she will not inherit fifty million dollars."

The courtroom became so quiet that even the cameras stopped clicking.

Richard smiled gently at Lily.

"She will inherit the entire Carter Global Corporation..."

"...currently valued at over 2.3 billion dollars."

Emily screamed.

Then she collapsed to the courtroom floor.

The fortune she had tried to steal wasn't fifty million after all.

It was a billion-dollar empire.
