CHAPTER 3: "The Trial That Made America Hold Its Breath"

The courtroom was packed before sunrise.
Reporters filled every bench. Cameras waited outside the doors. Strangers who had followed Lily’s story online stood in the hallway holding signs that read:
JUSTICE FOR LILY.
Emily walked in wearing a pale gray suit, her face hidden behind dark sunglasses.
For months, she had played the grieving aunt.
Now the whole world knew she was something far worse.
Daniel sat in the front row with Lily beside him. She looked healthier now, but when Emily entered, the little girl’s fingers tightened around her father’s hand.
Emily looked at Lily once.
Just once.
Then she quickly looked away.
The prosecutor stood and began with a sentence that silenced the room.
“This was not a moment of weakness. This was a plan. A slow, careful, selfish plan to steal a child’s inheritance.”
The jury watched the surveillance footage.
Emily entering the hospital room.
Emily switching the medicine.
Emily smiling at Daniel afterward like nothing had happened.
Daniel lowered his head, fighting tears.
Then the prosecutor played the final piece of evidence.
A recorded phone call.
Emily’s voice filled the courtroom.
“If Lily dies before eighteen, everything becomes mine. Daniel is too broken to notice anything.”
Gasps exploded across the room.
Emily’s lawyer jumped up, but it was too late.
The damage was done.
Daniel stood so suddenly the chair scraped against the floor.
“You came to my house,” he said, his voice shaking. “You ate dinner with us. You braided my daughter’s hair. You let me cry on your shoulder…”
Emily stared at him, trembling.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“And every single day, you were killing her.”
For the first time, Emily cried.
But Lily didn’t.
She slowly stood up, facing the aunt she once loved.
“You didn’t just want my money,” Lily said softly. “You wanted my daddy to be alone.”
The whole courtroom went silent.
Emily covered her mouth.
Then, just when everyone thought the trial had reached its most shocking moment, the courtroom doors opened.
An elderly man in a black suit walked in holding a sealed envelope.
Daniel froze.
Because the man was his father’s former attorney.
And what he carried would expose a secret even Emily didn’t know.

The will everyone had been fighting over…
was not the final will.
