Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist: The Ghost SpeaksWe stood on the deck of the vessel as the silhouette of the Manhattan skyline receded into the mist. My hands were scorched from the shorted-out battery of my ruined science project, but for the first time in my life, I felt completely alive.

Dr. Hart walked out of the cabin, carrying her sleeping child. She sat down next to me on the bench, looking at the smoke rising from the destroyed drive in my lap.
"Your father would have been so proud of you, Leo," she said softly. "You sacrificed your project twice—first for me, and then to save us all."
"It's over now, right?" I asked, looking down at my hands. "Apex lost the code. The key is destroyed. Sterling has nothing."
Dr. Hart looked out over the dark water, a strange, beautiful smile touching her lips.
"Sterling never had anything, Leo," she said quietly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, glass memory pod—completely undamaged. "The key you had was a decoy. Your father knew Apex would track it eventually."
I blinked in confusion. "Then... what was my project for?"
"Your father didn't leave the code in his daughter," Dr. Hart said, looking directly into my eyes. "He left it in you."
My breath hitched in my throat.
"Ten years ago, before the lab burned down, your father used his frequency invention to rewrite the neural pathways of a child—to store the world's most advanced medical algorithm inside a human mind where no corporation could ever steal it. He chose the person he loved most."
Dr. Hart reached out and gently touched my temple.
"You didn't build that bio-frequency monitor from scratch, Leo. You remembered how to build it from the subconscious memories your father locked inside your mind before he went into hiding."
She pressed a button on the side of the glass pod. A holographic projection shimmered in the cool night air between us.
A tall man with kind brown eyes, messy hair, and a warm smile appeared in the light.

"Hello, Leo," the projection of my father said, his voice echoing over the river. "If you're watching this... it means you made the right choice on the sidewalk."
I stared at the hologram of my father, tears streaming down my face as the boat carried us toward a future I was finally ready to create.
