Chapter 20 - The Final ReckoningOutside, the wail of sirens grew deafening.

Within minutes, three federal police cruisers—alerted automatically by the community center’s advanced defense grid—screeched into the parking lot, their high beams cutting through the artificial smoke. Officers swarmed the utility van, smashing the driver’s side window and dragging Thomas Vance out onto the asphalt in heavy steel handcuffs.
Inside the lobby, the emergency smoke purifiers hummed to life, clearing the air within seconds. The lights flickered back to a steady, warm white.
I walked out onto the front steps, looking down at the scattered letter from Vanessa that still lay near the entrance. I bent down, picked it up, and tore it cleanly in half before dropping it into a metal waste bin.
Marcus walked up beside me, slipping his phone back into his pocket. "Thomas Vance is in federal custody. The last remaining asset of the syndicate has been completely wiped out. It's truly over, Arthur."
I looked out across the sunlit courtyard, watching the children return to their games, completely safe and unaware of how close the darkness had come.
"Let them write their letters," I said, a deep, unshakeable peace settling into my chest. "Let them scream into the dark from their prison cells. They tried to burn me to ash, Marcus. But they forgot one simple rule."

"From enough ash," I smiled, looking up at the bright blue coastal sky, "you can build an entire world."
