Chapter 8 - Epilogue of Fire and IceThree months later, the ruins of my old suburban home had been entirely cleared away. The insurance settlement, combined with the recovered assets from Julian and Grant’s frozen accounts, had more than enough to rebuild—though I decided to sell the land and move into a quiet, peaceful cottage by the coast.

The trial was swift and brutal.

Grant Miller received a mandatory fifteen-year federal sentence for corporate fraud, identity theft, and reckless endangerment resulting in bodily injury. Vanessa, refusing to accept any accountability until the very end, was convicted of conspiracy and accessory to attempted murder, receiving a ten-year sentence in a maximum-security facility. Not a single family member came to their defense. Even their prized terrier, Baxter, had been legally rehomed through animal control to a loving family who actually knew how to walk a dog.

Julian Vance pleaded guilty in exchange for a slightly reduced federal sentence, spending his remaining years stripped of his wealth, his license, and his reputation, confined to a prison cell just down the corridor from his former partner-in-crime, Grant.

I sat on the wooden porch of my new coastal cottage, watching the waves crash against the rocky shore beneath a brilliant sunset. The salty breeze was cool, clean, and carried no scent of smoke.

Marcus walked out onto the porch, handing me a steaming cup of black coffee before leaning against the railing beside me.

"The final audit reports came through this morning," Marcus said, gazing out at the horizon. "Every single cent has been returned to the charitable trust you established in Ruth's name."

I took a slow sip of the coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my chest. "Good. Let the past burn, Marcus. Some things are better left in the ash."

He nodded slowly, raising his mug in a silent toast. "Agreed, Arthur. Some things are."
