Chapter 2 - The Midnight Extraction

Hook: When the lights go out in a hospital, people die. But tonight, the dark wasn't an accident—it was a hunting ground.

The darkness was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. Instantly, the backup generators should have kicked in within three seconds. They didn't.

Shouts of panic echoed down the corridors of the VIP wing. Toby felt a cold, gloved hand wrap around his wrist, pulling him backward with immense force. The scent of ozone and expensive cologne filled the air. It wasn't the security guards. It was the man Toby had seen earlier—the one with the snake tattoo.

"Let go of me!" Toby bit down hard on the hand holding him.

A muffled curse echoed through the dark, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor. Arthur Vance had tackled the intruder in the blind dark.

"Clara, grab Leo! Run!" Arthur roared, wrestling with the invisible assailant.

Toby, using his street-honed night vision, grabbed Clara’s sleeve. "This way! The laundry chute behind the nurse’s station leads to the basement! Follow me!"

Clara didn't hesitate. Clutching her dying infant to her chest, ignoring the IV lines that tore away from the machines, she followed the shadow of the eleven-year-old boy. Behind them, the sounds of gunfire shattered the glass walls of the ICU. Synthetic, suppressed gunshots—the weapon of professional cleaners.

They scrambled through the service door. Toby kicked open the aluminum hatch of the laundry chute. "Jump! It’s filled with soft linens, three floors down. It’s the only way out!"

Clara looked into the dark abyss of the chute, then at her pale, barely breathing baby. "If we stay, he dies," Toby urged. With a gasp of raw maternal courage, Clara slid into the chute, disappearing into the dark. Toby followed right behind her.

They landed with a heavy thud on a mountain of soiled hospital sheets in the sub-basement. The air smelled of detergent and damp concrete.

"We need to hide," Clara gasped, checking Leo. The baby was turning blue. The mark on his neck was pulsing violently now. "He needs oxygen, Toby. He’s going to die in my arms."

"The boiler room," Toby said, pulling her through the labyrinth of pipes. "There’s an old emergency kit there. I know because I hide there when it freezes outside."

But as they reached the heavy iron door of the boiler room, the emergency lights flittered back on, casting a dim, bloody red glow across the hallway. Standing at the end of the corridor was not Arthur, and not the security guards.

It was Dr. Harrison.

His lab coat was stained with blood, and in his hand, he held a sleek, black briefcase. His face lacked any of the panic he had shown upstairs. Instead, his eyes were cold, calculated, and predatory.

"Give me the child, Clara," Harrison said smoothly, stepping forward. "You were never supposed to find out about the micro-needle. If that gutter rat hadn't spoken up, Leo would have passed away peacefully from 'Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.' Now, things have to get messy."

Clara backed away, her spine hitting the cold iron door. "You... you did this? You're our family doctor! Arthur funded your entire research institute!"

"And who do you think bought my research?" Harrison smiled, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth. "Your husband’s own company, Clara. The Vance Global Syndicate. They don't want a healthy heir. They want the insurance, and they want the board seat that opens up when Arthur is destroyed by grief."

Harrison raised a small, silver pneumatic device—the exact same tool used to administer the poison. "Step away from the boy, Clara. Or I’ll ensure neither of you leaves this basement alive."

Chapter 2 Hook/Cliffhanger: Toby didn't run. Instead, he reached into his faded backpack and pulled out an object that made Dr. Harrison freeze in his tracks. It wasn't a weapon. It was a secondary phone belonging to Arthur Vance—and it was currently broadcasting a live stream directly to the global media.
