Chapter 4 - The 90th Floor

Hook: To save a life, you have to risk everything. To sneak into the most secure vault in the world, you don't need a master key—you need a boy who knows how to be invisible.

The rain lashed against the glass facade of the Vance Tower. At 2:00 AM, the building looked like a sleeping monolith, but inside, it was crawling with armed mercenaries wearing the insignia of 'Aegis Security.'

In the subterranean maintenance tunnels beneath the tower, Arthur adjusted a miniature earpiece in Toby’s ear.

"Toby, listen to me," Arthur said, his voice heavy with guilt. "You don't have to do this. This is my war, not yours."

"Nobody ever looked out for me," Toby replied, adjusting his worn backpack, which now contained a high-tech hacking device Arthur had given him. "But you guys didn't leave me in that alley. Let’s save the baby."

Without another word, Toby climbed into the vertical ventilation shaft. The metal was ice-cold and slick with grease. He climbed using his elbows and knees, a technique he had learned while navigating the abandoned subway systems of the city. The darkness inside the vents was oppressive, punctuated only by the distant hum of the building’s massive HVAC system.

For forty minutes, Toby crawled. His limbs ached; his skin was scraped raw. Through the grates he passed, he could see armed guards patrolling the floors below.

Finally, he reached the 90th floor. He peered through the vent cover into Victor Sterling’s office. It was a massive, opulent room with mahogany furniture and a panoramic view of the storm-lashed city. Sitting at the desk was Victor Sterling himself, pouring a glass of scotch, talking to someone on an encrypted satellite phone.

"Harrison failed," Sterling hissed into the receiver. "The baby is still alive, and Arthur has gone rogue. I don't care what it takes—find them and terminate the child. If the child dies, the estate defaults to the board by tomorrow morning."

Toby held his breath. He carefully unscrewed the vent grate, using a small multi-tool. He slipped out like a ghost, landing silently on the plush Persian rug behind Sterling’s desk.

The vault was built into the wall, protected by a retinal scanner and a 12-digit biometric code. Arthur had told Toby that the hacking device could bypass the code, but it would take exactly three minutes. Three minutes where Toby would be completely exposed.

Toby crept toward the vault panel, plugged in the device, and watched the digital numbers begin to cycle rapidly.

10%... 30%... 50%...

Suddenly, Sterling stood up from his desk and turned around to pour another drink. He froze. His eyes locked onto the small, dirty boy standing in front of his private vault.

"Well, well," Sterling said, a cruel smile spreading across his face as he reached into his jacket for a silenced pistol. "The little street rat. I must admit, I didn't think you'd have the guts to come here."

Toby didn't run. He didn't scream. He looked at the vault screen. 99%... Complete.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

"You're too late," Toby said.

Chapter 4 Hook/Cliffhanger: Sterling laughed, leveling the gun at Toby’s chest. "I don't think so, kid. Because what you don't know is that the master formula isn't in that vault. The vault is an explosive trap. And you just triggered the countdown."
