Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

Hook: The timer is ticking. 60 seconds to live. But when you have nothing left to lose, a countdown is just numbers.

The digital display on the vault wall turned a violent, flashing crimson. 00:59... 00:58...

A high-pitched alarm began to blare throughout the entire 90th floor. Sterling backed toward his private elevator, his gun still aimed at Toby. "Enjoy the fireworks, brat. You and this entire floor are about to become ash. A tragic accident caused by a terrorist street kid."

Sterling stepped into the elevator, the doors closing before him, leaving Toby alone with a bomb and a choice.

Instead of running for the vent, Toby threw himself inside the open vault. His eyes scanned the shelves. Sterling had lied—the master formula was there, contained in a silver thermos-like container designed to survive explosions. Sterling had just wanted Toby to panic and run so he would die in the blast radius while the formula stayed protected in the reinforced vault.

Toby grabbed the thermos. 00:32...

He sprinted out of the vault. The office doors were locked electronically. The ventilation shaft was too slow to climb down in thirty seconds. He was trapped on the 90th floor of a burning skyscraper.

Down in the parking garage, Arthur and Clara saw the top floors of the Vance Tower erupt in a deafening explosion. Shattered glass rained down onto the streets below like a glittering avalanche.

"TOBY!" Clara screamed, clutching Leo, who was now barely breathing, his heartbeat faint and erratic.

Up on the 90th floor, the office was a roaring inferno. The explosion had blown out the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Toby was lying on the floor, his face covered in soot, gasping for air. The fire was closing in around him. He looked out the shattered window at the endless drop below.

He looked at the silver thermos in his hand. If he jumped, he would die, and the medicine would destroy itself. If he stayed, he would burn.

Suddenly, a heavy rope dropped from the sky, swinging right through the shattered window frame. Dangling from a news helicopter above was a figure in a black tactical harness.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was Arthur’s loyal head of personal security, Marcus, who had hijacked the media chopper that had been filming the fire.

"KID! GRAB THE ROPE!" Marcus yelled over the deafening roar of the helicopter blades and the crackling flames.

Toby didn't hesitate. He secured the thermos in his backpack, ran toward the ledge, and leaped out into the open air, 90 stories above the ground.

Chapter 5 Hook/Cliffhanger: As Toby swung through the midnight air, clutching the rope for dear life, a sniper shot rang out from a neighboring rooftop. The bullet sliced directly through the helicopter’s tail rotor, sending the aircraft spinning out of control toward the concrete streets below.
