Chapter 3 - The Ghost Network

Hook: The truth won't set you free if the people controlling the truth own the airwaves. The Vance empire just went to war with itself.
"You're streaming," Toby said, his voice remarkably steady for a boy who hadn't eaten a hot meal in three days. "I found two phones in the wallet. This one didn't have a lock. I pressed the big red button on the app called 'Vance Live.' There are currently four million people watching you, doctor."
Harrison’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. He looked down at the phone in Toby's hand. The screen showed a live feed, the comment section scrolling so fast it was a blur of terrified and angry emojis. The global audience was witnessing a elite doctor threaten a mother and a dying child in the underbelly of a hospital.
"You little piece of trash," Harrison hissed. He lunged forward.
Suddenly, a massive iron pipe swung through the air, striking Harrison squarely across the temple. The doctor collapsed to the concrete floor, unconscious. Standing behind him was Arthur Vance, his face bruised, his expensive suit torn and covered in soot. He was breathing heavily, holding a rusted wrench.
"Arthur!" Clara cried, throwing her arms around him while keeping Leo safe between them.
"We have to go. Now," Arthur said, coughing. "The men upstairs aren't government agents. They're mercenaries hired by my Chief Financial Officer, Victor Sterling. He’s staging a corporate coup. They’ve locked down the city perimeter. Every cop in the district thinks I'm a terrorist who poisoned my own kid."
They ran out the loading dock doors into the torrential rain of the city night. Arthur’s armored SUV was waiting, its engine idling. Toby turned to leave, walking back into the dark alleyway.
"Hey!" Arthur called out over the sound of the rain. "Where do you think you're going?"
"I don't belong with you," Toby said, his head lowered. "I got you your wallet. I helped you get out. The cops will look for me if I'm with you."
"You saved my son's life twice tonight," Clara said, her voice fiercely emotional. "You are not going back to the streets. Get in the car!"
Toby hesitated, then scrambled into the back seat. The SUV roared to life, tearing through the wet streets of the metropolis.
As they drove, the baby’s condition worsened. Leo’s skin was becoming translucent, his veins showing through as dark green lines. Arthur opened the black briefcase he had stripped from Dr. Harrison’s unconscious body. Inside were rows of biometric vials, but they were all empty except for one—a deep violet serum labeled 'Antidote: Project Lazarus.'
"There's only half a dose," Arthur whispered, his hands shaking as he examined the vial. "Harrison was rationing it. It's not enough to fully cure him. If I inject this, it will buy him 24 hours, but we need the master formula to synthesize a permanent cure."
"Where is the master formula?" Clara asked, tears streaming down her face.
Arthur looked out the window at the towering, neon-lit skyscraper that dominated the city skyline—the Vance Global Headquarters.
"It's in Victor Sterling’s private vault. On the 90th floor," Arthur said grimly. "But the building is locked down by a private military force. It's a suicide mission."
Toby leaned forward from the back seat, staring at the blueprints displayed on the SUV's dashboard screen. His eyes focused on a small, unlabeled ventilation duct that bypassed the main security elevators.

"I can get in," Toby said softly. "The vent is only fourteen inches wide. No adult can fit. But I can."
Chapter 3 Hook/Cliffhanger: Arthur looked at the boy, then down at his phone. A breaking news alert popped up, displaying Toby’s face. The headline read: 'WANTED: 12-Year-Old Street Kid Identified as Prime Suspect in Biological Terrorism Threat.' Victor Sterling had framed the boy.
