Chapter 2 - The First FractureThree days after the dinner at Midtown, Ethan arrived at his gleaming office on the thirty-fifth floor with a glass of espresso in hand, feeling like a conqueror. The divorce was set to move forward uncontested, Vanessa was scheduled to move into his penthouse that weekend, and Walker Innovations was days away from securing its largest Series B funding round to date.

His executive assistant, Marcus, burst into the office without knocking. His face was entirely drained of color.

"Mr. Walker, we have a catastrophic issue," Marcus stammered, dropping a thick tablet onto the mahogany desk.

Ethan didn't look up from his screen. "If this is about the catering for Friday's gala with Vanessa, handle it."

"It’s not the gala, sir. It's the primary venture capital partner—Apex Global. They just pulled out. Every single million."

Ethan froze. His coffee cup hovered inches from his mouth. "Pulled out? Are they insane? I spoke with their managing director yesterday! We had a verbal handshake on a twenty-million-dollar injection!"

"They didn't just walk away, Ethan," Marcus said, his voice trembling. "They cited an immediate breach of foundational financial covenants. And... and they liquidated their minority stake in our subsidiary tech patents."

"That's impossible! Those patents are ironclad!" Ethan shouted, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled backward and slammed into the glass wall. "Call their senior partners! Tell them I want an emergency meeting right now!"

Marcus swallowed hard, looking down at his tablet. "I tried, sir. The managing director wouldn't even take the call. He only left one message with our legal department."

"What message?" Ethan demanded, his chest tightening with sudden panic.

"He said: 'When Clare pulls her silent capital out of the holding trust, the whole house of cards comes down. Talk to your wife, Walker—if she'll still talk to you.'"
