Chapter 11 - The Queen of Queens

The autumn wind whipped off the East River, rattling the loose windowpane of Ethan’s cramped Queens apartment. He pulled his thin wool coat tighter around his shoulders as he walked back from the corner grocery store, a plastic bag of instant noodles and cheap coffee clutched in his hand.

Across the river, the glittering skyline of Manhattan pulsed with neon and ambition. Among those towers stood the crown jewel of the tech world: the newly christened Bennett-Walker Technologies tower.

Inside that forty-second-floor office—the very same room where he had once celebrated his impending freedom—Clare sat behind a mahogany desk that smelled of fresh cedar and accomplishment. But she wasn't just managing the company anymore. She was expanding it.

"The acquisition of the Boston startup is finalized, Mrs. Walker-Bennett," Marcus Vance reported, sliding a tablet across her desk. "Their R&D team is onboard, and our sustainable infrastructure division is officially the largest in the Northeast."

Clare looked at the digital map of the northeastern seaboard, tracing her finger over Boston—the city where she and Ethan had spent their poorest, hardest years. Back then, she had typed his code while he slept, believing in a shared dream that he eventually corrupted with his own vanity.

"Good," Clare said calmly, her voice steady and resolute. "Make sure the employee profit-sharing agreements are distributed ahead of schedule. I want everyone who builds this company to own a piece of its future."

Marcus smiled, a rare expression of genuine warmth. "You know, Ethan’s old legal team tried to file a motion to challenge the original IP assignments last week. They got laughed out of federal court before they even reached the judge's chambers."

"Let him try," Clare replied, gazing out at the New York sunset. "He’s fighting shadows now. He lost the only thing of real value he ever possessed, and no court in the world can reverse that."
