CHAPTER 1 — THE DOG THAT REFUSED TO LEAVE

The frozen lake was supposed to be empty.
No one should have been there as the last light of sunset disappeared behind the snow-covered pines. The warning signs had been posted for weeks.
"DANGER. THIN ICE."
But somewhere in the middle of the lake, eleven-year-old Ethan Carter was fighting for every breath.
His body floated between jagged sheets of broken ice. His fingers had turned blue. Every second the freezing water stole more strength from his small body.
He screamed once.
Then again.
The sound vanished into the endless winter.
Nobody came.
Except one.
A massive German Shepherd burst out of the forest, its paws pounding across the snow. The dog stopped at the edge of the cracked ice, ears standing high, eyes locked onto the terrified boy.
Instead of barking wildly, it studied him.
As if it understood.
The dog stepped carefully onto the frozen surface, testing every inch before moving closer.
Ethan's frozen lips trembled.
"Please..."
He didn't know whether he was talking to the dog... or to God.
The Shepherd lowered its body, stretching as far as it could without breaking the ice beneath itself.
Its huge paw reached toward the boy.
Just inches away.
Ethan grabbed it.
For a brief moment, hope returned.
But the ice shattered again.
CRACK!
The boy slipped even deeper into the freezing water.
The dog nearly fell in with him.
From the shoreline, two hikers finally appeared.
"Oh my God!"
"It's attacking him!"
Without understanding what they were seeing, they grabbed sticks and began shouting at the animal.
The German Shepherd ignored every scream.
Ignored every threat.
Ignored everything...
Except the little boy who was slowly disappearing beneath the ice.
Then the impossible happened.
The dog lunged forward one final time—not toward Ethan's face...
But toward something hidden beneath the frozen water.
Something no one else had noticed.
May you like
And the moment its teeth clamped onto it...
Everyone watching froze in horror.
