CHAPTER 6 — THE BULLET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The forest became eerily quiet.
"Ranger!"
Officer Mason ran toward the sound, his heart pounding harder with every step.
Then he saw him.
The German Shepherd lay beside a fallen tree, breathing heavily.
A bullet had torn through his shoulder.
But Ranger wasn't alone.
Pinned beneath him was the gunman.
The dog had tackled the sniper before he could fire another shot.
The suspect struggled desperately, but Ranger refused to release his grip.
Police rushed in and handcuffed the man.
When they pulled off his black mask, everyone froze.
It wasn't Ethan's stepfather.
It was former Detective Victor Hale.
A decorated investigator who had disappeared after being accused of evidence tampering years earlier.
Victor smiled through bloodied lips.
"You still don't understand."
"There are others."
Before anyone could question him further, he bit down on something hidden inside his mouth.
Foam appeared instantly.
The paramedics tried everything...
But within minutes, Victor was dead.
His final secret died with him.
Back at the cabin, investigators searched Victor's belongings.
They discovered a hidden flash drive.
Inside were hundreds of encrypted files.
Corruption.
Kidnappings.
Bribery.
Evidence against powerful people—including officers, judges, and businessmen.
One video file was labeled:
"If you're watching this... Ranger was never supposed to survive."
Detective Mason clicked Play.
The screen flickered to life.
A man whose face was hidden by shadows began to speak.
"If this message has been found... then the first plan has failed."
"The dog exposed us once."
"He'll expose us again."
"And that's why..."
"We buried the wrong dog."
The video ended.
Every officer stared at Ranger, now recovering in the veterinary hospital.
The hero they had mourned three years ago...
Had never actually died.
Someone had faked his death to hide a conspiracy far bigger than anyone could imagine.
