CHAPTER 2 — WHAT THE DOG FOUND UNDER THE ICE CHANGED EVERYTHING
The hikers stopped shouting.
The dog wasn't biting Ethan.
It had grabbed the strap of the boy's backpack.
With unbelievable strength, the German Shepherd leaned backward, digging its paws into the ice while refusing to let go.
The backpack held.
Slowly...
Painfully...
Ethan's body began sliding toward the surface.
One hiker finally realized the truth.
"Help him!"
The two adults crawled across the ice, spreading their weight as rescue teams teach in survival classes.
Together, they pulled Ethan onto solid ice just seconds before the hole widened into a deadly black circle.
The boy was alive.
Barely.
As paramedics rushed toward them, everyone turned to thank the heroic dog.
But the Shepherd wasn't celebrating.
It had returned to the edge of the broken ice.
Staring silently into the freezing water.
Whining.
Again.
And again.
The rescue captain frowned.
"Why won't he leave?"
The dog suddenly barked once...
Then began scratching violently at another crack several feet away.
Rescuers looked at each other.
Something wasn't right.
They carefully broke through the thin ice where the dog kept pointing.
What emerged shocked everyone.
A small red mitten.
Then another.
Moments later, divers entered the water.
Hidden beneath the floating ice was another child—a little girl no older than six—trapped beneath a sheet of frozen water, unconscious but still alive because an air pocket had formed beneath the ice.
No one even knew she was missing.
If the German Shepherd had walked away after saving Ethan...
She would have died unnoticed.
Hours later, doctors confirmed both children would survive.
News cameras filled the hospital entrance.
Reporters called the Shepherd a miracle.
But one elderly police officer quietly stared at the dog's worn leather collar.
His face suddenly turned pale.
"I know this dog..."
Everyone looked at him.
The officer whispered words that sent chills through the entire room.
"That's Ranger..."
"The K-9 hero we buried three years ago."
Silence consumed the hallway.
