CHAPTER 7 — THE MAN BEHIND THE BADGE

The video changed everything.
Within hours, federal agents sealed off the police station. Every officer who had ever worked with former Detective Victor Hale was questioned.
But the encrypted files revealed something even darker.
For nearly fifteen years, a secret criminal network had operated from inside the justice system itself.
Missing children.
Insurance murders disguised as accidents.
Witnesses who vanished before trial.
Every crime had one thing in common.
Whenever someone got too close to the truth...
They disappeared.
Detective Mason couldn't shake one question.
"If Ranger was never dead... who kept him hidden?"
The answer arrived unexpectedly.
An elderly man walked into the veterinary hospital carrying an old military duffel bag.
His name was Samuel Brooks.
A retired K-9 trainer.
When Ranger saw him, the powerful Shepherd whimpered like a puppy and gently rested his head against the old man's chest.
Samuel smiled sadly.
"I promised him we'd meet again."
Everyone stared.
Three years earlier, Samuel had discovered that corrupt officers planned to kill Ranger after the heroic dog uncovered evidence during a drug raid.
So he secretly swapped Ranger with another terminally ill Shepherd that had died naturally only days later.
The public believed Ranger had been buried.
In reality...
Samuel had hidden him on a remote mountain farm, waiting for the day the truth could finally come out.
"But someone found out," Samuel whispered.
"They've been hunting Ranger ever since."
Just then, Mason's phone rang.
The forensic lab had finally decrypted the last file.
Inside was only one name.
COMMISSIONER RICHARD BLACKWELL.
The highest-ranking police official in the state.
The man who had personally attended Ranger's funeral...
And the man now leading the investigation.
Mason slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
The mastermind hadn't been hiding.
He had been standing beside them all along.
