Chapter 1 - The Accountant’s Ledger and the Phantom GhostMalcolm Reed didn’t look like a man who worked for the underworld. He looked like an auditor who spent too much time under fluorescent lights in a windowless room, drinking stale black coffee and staring at spreadsheets until his vision blurred.

At 9:15 AM, Malcolm’s encrypted file landed on Adrian’s secure terminal.

Adrian didn’t even wait to sit down. He clicked the document open while standing over his mahogany desk, his knuckles pressed flat against the polished wood.

AUDIT REPORT: PROJECT CLEARING Subject: Financial Trails and Fabricated Routing Status: COMPROMISED FROM WITHIN

The words hit Adrian like a physical blow. Malcolm hadn’t just re-verified the accounts; he had dismantled them layer by layer.

The bank transfers that supposedly tied Elena to the Moretti family? They were routing numbers from a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. That shell company didn’t belong to Elena. It belonged to a holding firm called Apex Holdings.

Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard his back teeth ached.

Apex Holdings was a front. A front managed exclusively by Roland Pierce, the organization’s silver-haired legal fixer.

The handwriting on the note—the supposed confession from Elena—wasn’t hers at all. Malcolm’s forensic analysis revealed digital cloning. Someone had taken old greeting cards Elena had written to Adrian years ago, scanned the letters, and stitched them together using advanced vector mapping to spell out a treasonous narrative.

It was a forgery. A masterclass in corporate framing executed with cold, deliberate precision.

And Grant Mercer had handed it to him with a sympathetic smile.

"You son of a bitch," Adrian whispered, the blood roaring in his ears.

Before he could lift his phone to call Malcolm for verbal confirmation, the intercom on his desk chimed.

"Boss," Lucas Benton’s voice crackled through the speaker. Lucas, despite taking a bullet through the shoulder less than a week ago, was back on his feet, fueled by pure adrenaline and loyalty. "We found the car."

Adrian’s heart stopped. "Elena's car?"

"No, boss. The car Elena was picked up in on Thursday night. The black sedan. The plates were registered to a dead man in Worcester, but we tracked the toll passes. It didn't go toward the highway. It went south. Toward the old salt flats off Narragansett Bay."

Adrian didn't hesitate. He grabbed his Glock from the holster in the drawer, shoved it into his waistband, and stormed out of the study.

The trap was closing. But it wasn't closing around Elena.

It was closing around the traitors inside his own house.
