Chapter 3 - The Confession of a JudasAdrian stopped dead ten feet inside the warehouse. His eyes locked onto Grant, then flicked to Roland, and finally landed on Elena.

For a fraction of a second, Elena’s eyes met his. There was no relief in them. Only exhaustion, and a profound, chilling indifference.

"Drop the gun, Grant," Adrian said. His voice was quiet, but it carried the lethal weight of an executioner.

Grant chuckled, pressing the barrel a fraction of an inch closer to Elena’s temple. "I don’t think you’re in a position to give orders, Adrian. Look around. My men are stationed at every exit. You brought what, four guys? Heroism looks good on you, but it’s terrible for your life expectancy."

"You betrayed the family," Adrian said, stepping forward.

"Betrayed?" Grant’s face twisted into an ugly mask of resentment. "I built this family, Adrian! For fourteen years, I took the risks. I cleaned up your messes, I buried your bodies, I made sure the politicians stayed bought. And what did I get? I got to be your second-in-command while you played domestic bliss with a woman who didn't even understand the blood on your hands."

"It was about power," Roland Pierce chimed in, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses calmly. "The Vale organization has grown stagnant, Adrian. You’ve gone soft. A baby? Really? You were planning to step back, hand the reins to a nursery, and let fourteen years of empire-building crumble into domesticity."

Roland stood up, smoothing the lapels of his immaculate suit.

"The Moretti family offered us a partnership," Roland continued smoothly. "Control of the northern shipping lanes, full immunity from the federal task forces, and a clean slate. All we had to do was hand them the Whitmore route, eliminate you in the ambush, and pin it on your dear wife. It was poetry, Adrian. Flawless poetry."

"Except for one detail," Adrian said.

Grant frowned. "What detail?"

"You didn't check the bedroom closet," Adrian said.

A shadow of confusion crossed Grant’s face before he recovered his arrogant smirk. "What are you talking about?"

"She was pregnant, Grant," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a rage so pure it felt cold. "You didn't just frame a traitor. You helped orchestrate the destruction of my bloodline. And for that, there is no negotiation. There is no exile. There is only the pit."
