Chapter 1 - The Paperwork of Doom

The silence inside the grand cathedral was so heavy you could hear the flickering of the candle flames. Hundreds of high-society guests sat frozen, their phones suspended in mid-air as live streams continued to broadcast the nightmare to millions online.
The stranger stood beside the pregnant woman, his dark coat draped over his shoulders, eyes like polished ice. His name was Julian Vance—a private investigator whose name sent shivers down the spines of the city's elite.
"She's telling the truth," Julian repeated, his voice echoing off the stained-glass windows. "Her name is Clara. And the baby she’s carrying is seven months old—conceived the exact week you bought the engagement ring for your bride, Daniel."
Daniel, the groom, looked like he was about to vomit. His pristine white tuxedo seemed to shrink on his trembling frame. "No... no, this is a setup! Richard, please! You know me! I love your daughter!"
Richard Montgomery, the bride’s father and sole owner of Montgomery Global Logistics, stepped into the center of the aisle. He ignored Daniel entirely. Instead, he handed the thick stack of leather-bound documents to his daughter, Victoria, who was still trembling in rage on the polished marble floor.
"Read page four, Victoria," Richard said softly. His voice wasn't angry; it was deadly calm.
Victoria snapped the folder open with shaking hands. Her eyes scanned the legal jargon, the bank logos, the offshore account transfers... and then her breath hitched.
"What... what is this?" Victoria whispered, her mascara running down her flushed cheeks. "Daniel... why is my name listed as the primary guarantor for a forty-million-dollar shell corporation in the Cayman Islands?"
The crowd gasped.
"He didn't just cheat on you, my sweet girl," Richard said, finally turning his glare onto Daniel. "He spent the last three years systematically stealing your trust fund, forging your signature, and using our family's fortune to cover up his real identity. Daniel isn't a self-made tech entrepreneur. He’s a convicted fraudster from London who changed his name four years ago."
Daniel took a step back, looking toward the exit doors, but two heavy-set security guards in black suits blocked the heavy oak doors.
"And that’s not even the worst part," Clara, the pregnant woman, choked out from the floor, clutching her belly. "He told me... he told me Victoria was his mentally unstable sister who was forcing him to manage her estate! He said he was saving money to run away with me and our baby!"
Victoria stared at Daniel—the man she had loved for four years, the man she was five seconds away from promising her life to. The world around her spun.
"You monster," Victoria screamed, lunging toward him again. But before she could touch him, Daniel’s mother—who had been sitting quietly in the front row—stood up and shouted something that shattered the room completely.

"Stop it, all of you!" the mother yelled, stepping onto the altar. "Richard, tell her the truth! Tell her why you let Daniel get this close to your family in the first place!"
Cliffhanger: The mother knew. And the bride’s father wasn't an innocent victim after all.
