Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Machine

The black SUV pulled into a dark, underground parking facility beneath the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters. Armed federal tactical teams immediately surrounded the vehicle, weapons drawn.
Marcus opened the driver's door, stepped out, and unlocked the rear passenger doors. Daniel and Clara were dragged out, forced onto the cold concrete, and slapped in heavy steel handcuffs.
Victoria stepped out of Julian’s command van, her white dress now replaced with a sleek dark suit. She walked over to where Daniel was pinned against the hood of a police cruiser.
"You lose, Daniel," Victoria said softly, standing inches from his face.
Daniel spat on the ground, glaring up at her with pure hatred. "You think this is over because you caught us? You think your precious daddy is safe? Check the news, Victoria! Look at what’s breaking right now!"
Julian’s tablet vibrated violently in his hand. He looked down at the screen, his face turning pale.
"Victoria... look at this," Julian said, his voice grim.
Victoria took the tablet. The headline on every major news network read:
"MONTGOMERY GLOBAL ACCUSED OF MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR INTERNATIONAL WEAPONS SMUGGLING – CEO RICHARD MONTGOMERY ARRESTED FROM HOSPITAL BED."
Victoria felt a cold drop of sweat trace down her spine. "What... what is this?"
"Did you really think my plan was just about forty million dollars?" Daniel laughed hysterically, his eyes wild with madness. "That forty million was a smoke screen, Victoria! While you were tracking my crypto transfers, my partners uploaded forty years of your father's dark financial ledgers to every federal agency in the world!"
Victoria turned to Julian. "Julian, tell me this isn't real."
Julian looked away, unable to meet her eyes. "Victoria... the documents Daniel leaked... they're authentic. Your father wasn't just a dirty businessman who burned down my father's company. He’s been laundering money for international cartels for two decades."
Victoria felt her world crumble a second time. Everything she knew—her family, her wealth, her father's legacy—was built on a mountain of blood and lies.
"And do you want to know who my partner is?" Daniel sneered, leaning closer to her ear. "Do you want to know who gave me the keys to your father’s vault in the first place?"
Daniel leaned in and whispered a name into Victoria's ear.

Victoria’s eyes widened in horror. Her knees buckled, and she almost fell to the ground.
Cliffhanger: The real villain pulling Daniel's strings was someone Victoria trusted more than her own father!
