Chapter 10 - The House With the Yellow DoorThree months later.

The morning sun streamed brightly through the clean, crystal-clear windows of a charming, two-story house on the outskirts of Chicago. A fresh coat of white paint gleamed on the siding, and the front door stood proud and bright—painted a brilliant, welcoming shade of yellow.

In the spacious, modern kitchen, the smell of pancakes and fresh coffee filled the air.

Thomas Miller stood at the stove, flipping a golden-brown pancake with a relaxed, easy smile on his face. He wore a simple flannel shirt—no maintenance uniform, no bleach stains, no crushing weight on his chest.

Footsteps padded softly down the wooden stairs.

Lily bounced into the kitchen, her cheeks rosy with health, breathing easily without an oxygen mask, clutching a fresh box of crayons in her small hands.

"Daddy! Look! I finished my drawing!" Lily announced proudly, holding up a piece of paper.

Thomas knelt down, taking the paper from her small hands. It was a vibrant, colorful drawing of a house with a bright yellow door, standing proudly beneath a smiling sun. Three stick figures stood in the front yard: a tall man with brown hair, a smiling woman with bright green eyes, and a little girl holding a balloon.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Thomas whispered, kissing the top of her head. "The best one yet."

A pair of arms wrapped gently around Thomas’s waist from behind. A chin rested softly on his shoulder, smelling of familiar winter jasmine and warm coffee.

"Is the master chef ready for breakfast, or are we going to burn the pancakes again?" Sarah teased, her green eyes sparkling with a quiet, hard-won peace as she pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.

Thomas turned around, wrapping his arms around his wife’s waist and pulling her close against him, looking out the window at the quiet, peaceful street outside.

The eviction notices were gone. The hospital bills were paid. The ghosts of Adler Vanguard were locked behind bars where they belonged.

They weren't hiding anymore. They were finally home.

"Never gonna burn 'em again," Thomas whispered, leaning down to press his lips softly against hers as Lily cheered in the background. "We've got all the time in the world."
