Chapter 7 - The Mask SlipsThe hum of the massive server racks seemed to drop into a deafening silence.

Thomas stood frozen, his brain refusing to process the words. He stared at the woman standing across the cold concrete floor—the multi-billionaire CEO of Adler Vanguard, the untouchable titan of Chicago’s logistics world.

And then, underneath the tailored wool coat, the expensive perfume, and the cold corporate armor, he saw it.

He saw the tiny, crescent-shaped scar just below her left ear—the one she got when they fell off a bicycle together during their second year of college. He saw the exact way her green eyes narrowed when she was holding back tears. He saw the slope of her nose, the curve of her jaw, the voice he had wept over every single night for the past two years.

"Sarah?" Thomas breathed, the name tearing out of his throat like glass. "No... no, you're dead. The police... the funeral... the body..."

"There was no body, Tommy," Sarah—Amelia—whispered, a single tear finally spilling over her lashes and cutting a clean path down her cheek. "Just a burned-out husk of a car and a ring that belonged to someone else."

Julian Vance laughed, clapping his hands slowly. "Oh, what a touching family reunion! A husband who thinks he's a poor maintenance worker, and a wife who reinvented herself as the most ruthless corporate CEO in the Midwest to protect him from the people who hunted her down."

Julian leaned down, gripping Lily’s shoulder a little too tightly. The little girl let out a whimper of pain.

"Get your hands off my daughter!" Thomas roared, lunging forward with a blind, feral fury.

The two mercenaries didn't hesitate. One of them swung the heavy butt of his assault rifle directly into Thomas’s chest, sending him crashing backward onto the concrete floor with a sickening thud. The wind was knocked completely out of his lungs, leaving him gasping like a dying fish.

"Tommy!" Sarah screamed, rushing forward, but the second mercenary jammed the barrel of his rifle straight under her chin, stopping her in her tracks.

"Ah-ah, Madam CEO," Julian sneered, stepping over Thomas’s writhing body. "Don't move an inch. You see, five years ago, your billionaire father faked your death to save you from our cartel partners after you tried to whistleblow on his illegal supply chains. He gave you a new face, a new name—Amelia Adler—and hid you behind an impenetrable corporate fortress."

Julian looked down at Thomas, who was coughing up blood on the floor, struggling to push himself up on his bruised elbows.

"And you?" Julian sneered, shaking his head. "You were just an unlucky, honest mechanic who fell in love with the wrong girl. When they faked her death, they had to wipe your memory too—a clean psychological wipe, courtesy of Vanguard’s experimental neuro-pharmaceutical division. They left you on the South Side with a fake history, a fake life, and a sick child, making sure you would never remember who your wife really was... until today."

Thomas stared up at Julian, his head ringing, fragments of a forgotten life violently colliding behind his eyes. Flashes of a wedding ring, a sunlit kitchen, a different name, a different life—all crashing into the crushing reality of the present.

"You... you did this to us," Thomas growled, blood dripping from his chin. "You destroyed our family."

"And now," Julian said, raising his pistol, pointing it straight at Lily’s small forehead, "we're going to finish it. Sign the transfer documents, Amelia. Or I blow your daughter's brains out right here, and then I put a bullet in your husband's head for the second time."
