Chapter 5 - The Harbor FortressThe Adler Vanguard Logistics Hub loomed over the frozen Chicago harbor like a monolithic temple of steel and glass. At 3:45 AM, the massive shipping bays were dark and silent, save for the hum of container cranes shifting cargo against the bitter lake winds.

A sleek black Maybach drifted silently into the shadow of Pier 4, its headlights dowsed.

Inside the car, Thomas sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield at the private security gates. In his lap rested a heavy, military-grade tactical vest and a suppressed submachine gun that Amelia had pulled from the vehicle’s hidden armory.

He had never held a real firearm in his life. But as he checked the magazine, his hands didn't shake. Fear had burned away, leaving behind only the cold, sharp focus of a father with nothing left to lose.

"The main security grid is controlled from the subterranean server room on Level B2," Amelia whispered, tapping away at a secure tactical tablet. "That's where they’ll have her. They’ll use her as leverage to force me to sign over my voting shares during the emergency board meeting scheduled for dawn."

"How do we get in without triggering the silent alarms?" Thomas asked, sliding the tactical vest over his worn maintenance uniform.

"We don't," Amelia said, looking up with a grim smile. "We walk right through the front door. I’m the CEO. The biometric locks recognize my retinas, even if the system has been partially compromised by whoever is backing this coup."

She reached out and placed her hand over Thomas’s bleeding knuckles, stopping him as he reached for the door handle.

"Thomas... what happened to your wife?" Amelia asked suddenly, her voice softening just a fraction, catching him completely off guard.

Thomas froze. He stared at her hand on his, the question hitting him like a physical blow out of nowhere.

"Why are you asking me that now?" Thomas muttered, pulling his hand away. "She died two years ago. Hit-and-run on a rainy Thursday morning. Wrong place, wrong time."

Amelia’s emerald eyes flickered with a strange, heavy emotion—something that looked dangerously close to guilt, mixed with profound sorrow. But before she could speak, the secure tablet in her lap beeped.

"Move," Amelia snapped, shaking off the expression. "Time’s up."

They slipped out of the Maybach and melted into the freezing shadows of Pier 4.

The infiltration was swift, silent, and brutal. Using her executive security override codes, Amelia bypassed the perimeter fences, leading Thomas through the subterranean maintenance tunnels—the very same tunnels Thomas had cleaned just hours earlier.

They reached the heavy steel blast doors of Level B2.

Through the small wire-reinforced glass window of the control room, Thomas saw a sight that made his blood run cold.

In the center of the cold, server-lined room sat a small folding chair. Bound to it with industrial zip-ties was Lily, her small chest heaving as she struggled for breath through a makeshift nebulizer mask. Standing over her was a tall man in an expensive tailored suit, his back turned to the door. Beside him stood two armed mercenaries with assault rifles slouched across their chests.

The man in the suit turned around.

When Thomas saw his face through the glass, he let out a choked gasp that nearly gave away their position.

It was Julian Vance—Amelia’s senior vice president and the primary shareholder of Vanguard Logistics.

"Well, well, well," Vance’s voice filtered clearly through the intercom speaker on the wall. "I was wondering when the queen would finally grace us with her presence. And you brought the janitor too. How delightfully domestic."
