Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass and Old GhostsThe stairwell of the tenement building smelled of damp drywall, old cabbage, and rising panic.

Thomas took the steps three at a time, his boots pounding against the concrete. His lungs burned, but he couldn't feel the pain. Every beat of his heart hammered out a single, terrifying name: Lily. Lily. Lily.
He reached the third floor. The heavy fire door to apartment 304 had been blown off its hinges. Splintered wood and white plaster dust coated the hallway floor like fresh snow.
Thomas skidded to a halt at the threshold.
"Lily?!" he screamed, his voice echoing into the dark apartment.
The living room was completely wrecked. The small secondhand sofa had been slashed open. Cotton stuffing drifted through the air like feathers. A small, pink plastic tea set lay crushed under a heavy tactical boot.
And sitting on the kitchen counter, illuminated by the blinking red light of an unshielded oxygen tank, was a digital tablet playing a children’s cartoon on mute.
But Lily was gone.
Thomas fell to his knees in the middle of the ruined room, his hands clawing at the shredded carpet. A low, animalistic sob ripped from his chest—the sound of a broken man whose last tether to this world had just been snapped.
"No... no, you bastards, take me! Take me instead!" he wept, pounding his fists against the floorboards until his knuckles bled.
A soft, controlled step sounded behind him in the doorway.
Amelia walked into the apartment, her pistol drawn, her eyes sweeping the corners of the room for tripwires or heat signatures. She didn't flinch at Thomas’s grief; instead, she walked straight over to the oxygen tank and knelt down, touching the metal cylinder.
"It's still warm," Amelia said quietly.
Thomas snapped his head up, his tear-streaked face twisting in sudden hope. "What?"
"The tank," Amelia said, standing up and inspecting a small digital pad attached to the unit. "They didn't have time to pack up the medical gear. That means they grabbed her less than ninety seconds before we pulled up." She tapped her earpiece. "Marcus, report! Did Vanguard intercept the black SUVs on 5th?"
Static hissed. Then Marcus’s voice came back, strained and breathless: "Boss... we hit the intersection, but the SUVs split up into three different directions. False plates. They anticipated our drone sweep. We lost them."
Amelia’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice. She lowered her comms and looked down at Thomas.
"We didn't lose them entirely," Amelia said, her voice dropping into a low, tactical hum. "Whoever is running this operation isn't just trying to recover corporate data. They used a military-grade extraction team to pull a six-year-old child out of a South Side tenement within twenty minutes of a wallet being dropped. That requires local satellite surveillance."
She walked over to the shattered window overlooking the alley.
"Which means," Amelia continued, turning back to Thomas, "they aren't hiding out in some random motel. They’re running this out of a high-security communications relay. And there’s only one building within a five-mile radius with that kind of encrypted bandwidth."
Thomas slowly climbed to his feet, wiping the blood and tears from his face. The grief in his eyes was rapidly being replaced by something much colder, much darker.
"Where?" Thomas asked.
"The Adler Vanguard Logistics Hub on the harbor," Amelia said, her emerald eyes flashing with dangerous intent. "My own building. Someone on my board of directors is waging a shadow war against me, using your daughter as a hostage to force me to hand over the company."
She walked right up to Thomas, grabbing him by the shoulders of his stained maintenance jacket.
"Listen to me, Thomas Miller," Amelia whispered fiercely. "You want your daughter back? You’re going to have to walk into the lions' den with me. Because right now... you and I are the only two people in Chicago who know the truth."

Thomas looked down at the bleeding knuckles of his right hand, then straight into the cold, fierce eyes of the billionaire CEO.
"Let's go," Thomas said. "And if any one of them touches my little girl... I'll rip their throats out with my bare hands."
