Chapter 1 - THE FOUR-YEAR GHOST"What the hell is this?"

Grant’s voice finally cracked through the freezing Chicago air, losing its pristine corporate veneer. He took two sharp steps forward, trying to insert his physical presence between Claire and Dominic.

It was a laughable miscalculation.

Dominic didn't even look at Grant. His gaze remained locked on Claire, heavy with a dark, suffocating intensity that made the surrounding air feel thin. The six black sedans idling at the curb hummed with a low, synchronized vibration, their darkened windows reflecting the gray, bleak winter sky. Pedestrians on Michigan Avenue hurried past, lowering their heads, intuitively giving a wide berth to the silent, imposing figures in dark coats who guarded the perimeter.

"Claire," Dominic said again, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate straight through her ribs. "You dropped your pen."

Claire blinked, her mind frantically trying to bridge the chasm between the cold, sterile conference room she had just exited and the terrifying underworld figure standing before her. Four years ago, Dominic Vale had vanished from Chicago’s glittering high-society circuit after a federal sweep that took down half the city's port syndicate—a sweep that rumors whispered he had orchestrated from the inside to eliminate his rivals.

And now, here he was. Waiting by a convoy. For her.

"Dominic," Claire managed, her voice barely a whisper against the wind. "You... you shouldn't be here."

"I’ve been here every day, Claire," Dominic replied softly, taking another step closer. "Just far enough away not to crowd you. And just close enough to catch you when he finally let you fall."

"Excuse me!" Grant barked, stepping up beside Lauren, his face flushing a furious, mottled red. He jabbed a manicured finger toward Dominic’s chest. "I don't know what kind of cheap street theater you're playing at, but this is a private matter. My ex-wife—"

Thud.

Before Grant’s finger could fully extend, one of the massive security guards flanking Dominic moved. It wasn't a violent strike, but a swift, absolute redirection of space. The guard caught Grant's wrist, twisting it just enough to force Grant to stumble backward into Lauren, who let out a sharp gasp as her designer handbag hit the slushy pavement.

"Do not point at him," the guard said, his voice flat, devoid of human emotion.

"Do you know who I am?" Grant yelled, wrenching his arm free and panting with indignation, his expensive wool coat flapping in the wind. "I am Grant Mercer! I run major capital campaigns in this city! I will have every license your employer holds revoked by sunset!"

Dominic finally shifted his eyes away from Claire. He looked at Grant the way a seasoned botanist might look at an uninteresting pest crawling across a rotting log.

"Grant," Dominic murmured, tasting the name like something foul. "Twelve years. You had the finest home in the Gold Coast, millions in foundation assets, a line of credit that stretched from here to Zurich... and you couldn't even keep her happy."

Dominic turned back to Claire, his expression softening into something dangerous and protective. He reached out, his leather-gloved hand gently taking the blue folder—the one containing the devastating forensic audit—right out of her trembling fingers.

"Come on, Claire," Dominic whispered, holding open the heavy rear door of the lead sedan. The interior was lined with dark wood and plush leather, smelling faintly of expensive cedar and rain. "Let's go home. The real work starts now."

Claire looked back at the revolving doors of the courthouse. She looked at Grant, whose face was now twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated panic as he finally recognized the terrifying reality of who Dominic Vale actually was.

And then, Claire looked at Dominic.

Without another word, she ducked her head and stepped into the car.
