Chapter 9 - THE KINGMAKER'S DUETThree months later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune featured a headline that sent shockwaves through the city's elite financial circles:

HARBOR LIGHTS FOUNDATION RE-LAUNCHES WITH RECORD 50-MILLION-DOLLAR ANONYMOUS ENDOWMENT.

Below the fold, smaller articles detailed the ongoing federal trials of Marcus Sterling and Grant Mercer, whose disgraced assets were being systematically auctioned off to pay restitution to the victims of their financial fraud. Grant was facing a mandatory fifteen-year sentence in a maximum-security federal facility, completely stripped of his wealth, his status, and his freedom.

Inside a sprawling, private penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, the morning sun poured through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting golden light across a minimalist, elegant living room.

Claire sat at a sleek oak desk, reviewing the final restructuring documents for the foundation's new pediatric wings. Her name was at the top of the executive board—not as a founder's wife, but as sole director and visionary.

Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.

"You've been staring at those papers for two hours," Dominic murmured, kissing the side of her neck.

"I'm just making sure the numbers add up," Claire smiled, leaning back against his chest, feeling the solid, grounding warmth of his embrace. "No hidden clauses. No secret accounts."

Dominic chuckled, turning her chair around so she was facing him. He knelt down on one knee right in front of her chair, his dark eyes shining with an emotion that the rest of the world was never permitted to see.

From his pocket, he pulled out a small, velvet box.

Claire’s breath hitched.

He opened it. Inside sat a breathtaking, vintage diamond ring—not flashy or vulgar like the one Grant had bought with stolen charity funds, but an exquisite, one-of-a-kind antique piece of deep sapphire and brilliant-cut white diamonds that looked like it belonged in a museum.

"I bought this four years ago," Dominic said quietly, looking up into her eyes. "The day I knew I was going to walk away to keep you safe from the federal fallout. I kept it in my safe every single day, waiting for the moment when the ledger was clean and you were truly free."

Tears welled in Claire's eyes, hot and bright, but this time, there was no pain in them—only a profound, overwhelming peace.

"Dominic..." she whispered.

"No conditions, Claire," he said, taking her left hand and sliding the stunning ring onto her finger. It fit with absolute, flawless perfection. "No games. Just you, me, and whatever empire we decide to build together."

Claire smiled, sliding her hands behind his neck and pulling him up into a deep, certain embrace.

"Let's build it," she whispered against his lips.
