Chapter 8 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PASTThe underground parking garage was dim, quiet, and echoing with the distant hum of city traffic.

Dominic’s black Maybach sat idling in its usual spot near the exit ramp. As Claire approached, the rear door swung open automatically.
Dominic was sitting inside, scrolling through a tablet. When he looked up and saw her standing there in the dim light, his dark eyes softened instantly. He set the tablet aside and stepped out onto the concrete floor.
"Finished saving the world?" Dominic asked, a faint, teasing smile playing on his lips.
"Just saving the children," Claire corrected, stopping a few feet away from him. The space between them was charged with an electric, undeniable tension—four years of longing, waiting, and unspoken devotion hanging heavy in the air.
Dominic took a slow step toward her. "And what about you, Claire? Who saves you?"
Claire looked up into his dark, intense eyes. For twelve years, she had believed that love meant compromise, quiet endurance, and hiding behind someone else's shadow.
With Dominic, love was a fire that burned away everything false until only the absolute truth remained.
"I think," Claire whispered, her voice steady and clear, "I'm finally strong enough to save myself. But... I wouldn't mind having someone walk beside me."
Dominic stopped right in front of her. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair. His touch was fierce yet impossibly tender.
"I waited four years, Claire," he murmured, his voice dropping to a rough, intimate whisper. "I would have waited forty."

And then, leaning down, he kissed her.
It wasn't the polite, measured kiss of high-society galas or the cold, performative peck of a failing marriage. It was deep, consuming, and absolute—a seal forged in fire, patience, and absolute devotion.
